Texas Maverick
In 1937, a remarkable sight captured the attention of residents near Miles City, Montana, when a massive grasshopper was reportedly shot. Dubbed the "Monster Grasshopper," this enormous insect became a subject of fascination, sparking curiosity and wonder among locals and beyond. Its size was so extraordinary that it quickly became a topic of conversation, with many speculating about the reasons behind its unusual growth. The grasshopper was said to be much larger than the typical specimens found in the area, and its size seemed almost otherworldly. The monster grasshopper’s discovery was particularly notable because of the era’s fascination with strange and unusual occurrences. Reports of oversized animals or mysterious phenomena often captured public imagination, and this particular insect seemed to embody the wonder and mystery of the natural world at the time. While some people questioned the authenticity of the creature’s size, others believed it was an example of nature’s strange quirks. The monster grasshopper, shot in the rural backdrop of Montana, became an enduring part of local lore, and its story has lived on in historical accounts and the collective memory of the region. Its place in history as a bizarre, seemingly mythical creature highlights the fascination people have had with unusual natural phenomena throughout the years. Pat Riot
I recall seeing this picture in a frame in a gas station in Texas when I was 10 or 11. The gas station attendant said it was a “Texas grasshopper”. I’ll tell you what, I kept my eyes peeled the whole time we were in Texas. I did not want one of those things anywhere near me.
