Lyman easy prime

Does anyone have any experience with the Lyman hand primer?

Mine arrived today, and so far it is a major pain in the ass. The instructions seem to have been written by a moron, and they do not, in my opinion, help at all in using it.

Lyman has a YouTube video showing how simple it is, but mine sure doesn't go together that easy.

And the comments on the Lyman video are quite uncomplementary. They say that if you don't use a Lyman shell holder it doesn't work right. That would suck.

So I figured I would come here and see if anybody has experience with them, and how they like them.

Looks a lot like the old Lee hand primer. I have 3 of these and love them.  Also have one RCBS that I had to buy because the Lee will not work with 56-50 brass. Can't remember which brand of 56-50 shell holder I have but with the RCBS I have to rake extra care to make sure I get the primer fully seated.

I can see where the brand of shell holder would make a difference. I have shell holders by RCBS, Lee, Lyman and Redding. The dimensions are slightly different between brands.

Started with the LEE but I switched to the RCBS units.

More comfortable to use.

I leave one set up for large primers and one for small primers

RCBS replaced the innards of the oldest one after they became worn.

I started with a Lee, moved to an RCBS, but after some issues with my hands I discovered the RCBS Automatic Priming Tool I only use that. I still have the Lee and RCBS hand primers. I just haven’t use them in a few years.

I have used nearly every hand primer over the years, Tongs, Sinclair, Hornady, RCBS, LEE, Bench mounted RCBS, FORSTER, press mounted RCBS, REDDING, it goes on and on.  Of the hand units (IMHO) LEE is the worst,  Hornady is the best, BUT after all these year of problems I finally decided to just buy the BEST BY FAR, a CPS from Primal Rights.   It is a dream come true. Worth every cent. Every primer is the same depth (to .001) and adjustable. It uses LEE case holders but I have plenty of them from over the years. The only thing LEE makes I would buy.

Sedalia Dave,  yes it seems awfully expensive, but as I said worth every cent. Most people have no idea how important primers and their seating is to accuracy.  For SASS anything that will seat a primer in the pocket is good enough but when you are shooting 1200 yds to a mile and a half it makes a tremendous difference. It also makes a difference at normal distances of 400 yds. plus.

Well you’re right , I got it together but I can’t seem to get the shell holder in correctly and the instructions suck big time! I’m having second thoughts about this thing! I’m calling Lyman tomorrow.

Interested in hearing what they say.

They’re saying that the primers don’t go in all the way unless you use Lyman shell holders. That seems to be the main complaint. I can see why.

Okay I got the shell holder in but I don’t have one for .45 Colt. I’ll have to try and find one.

IIRC, .308/.30-06 rife is the same.

The 308 - 30/06 rifle uses the same shell holder as the 45 ACP pistol. Not 45 Colt.

Maybe the shell holder for .44-40 or .44 Magnum would work.

45 Colt takes a Lyman  number 11. 44 Winchester takes an Lyman number 14B. And 44 Smith & Wesson (RSM) takes a Lyman number 7.

Handy dandy little thing to have in your files. I got it from Graf & Sons. If you don't want to risk downloading something I posted, you can go to grafs.com and download it there.

The "Ultimate Reloader" on YouTube gives a good review on that system.

Do they have a Chinese translator?

Why would the Chinese call Lyman? Press three for Chinese?

Lyman is owned by a privately held American company.

Update, I tried priming some .38’s and it works great. Now to get my .45s going I got brass on the way and I’ll get some primers today. A pard gave me 100 bullets.

When I received mine I attempted to prime some 32 Smith & Wesson. Could not get the Lee shell holder to fit into the unit.

Last night I attempted to prime some 38 Special. It went together correctly, but the primers were all sitting proud.

It's on its way back to Amazon.

It’s a little tricky to get that shell holder in but I think you said there’s actually something wrong with yours. Mine seems okay.
