Warden Callaway Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I never herd or seen this style of dancing before. Fascinating.
DocWard Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I am by no means an aficionado of dance. I was among the more challenged in getting it right in show ensemble in high school, took a ballroom dance course with Mrs. Doc in college, and used to be able to fumble my way through a foxtrot or two-step. A ballroom dance video will pop up on my YouTube feed once in awhile and I will watch it though, and that is a first for me. I had to go looking. From my brief search, it seems "shag" or "collegiate shag" is usually very uptempo. Since this was at a competition, I'm assuming it qualifies under their rules though, so I will have to peek down the rabbit hole a little and see what I can figure out.
Blackwater 53393 Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 That was great! I remember girls in skirts and guys wearing jeans or chinos when I was a little kid! Shag always facinated me since I never had the rhythm or coordination to even do a simple waltz, much less something so graceful!!
Kid Sopris, SASS Regulator Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I also loved their choice of music....Time to break out my oldies collection..
Subdeacon Joe Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Beautiful! Amazing footwork and coordination. I had to look it up: https://www.ncpedia.org/shag-dancing
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001 Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I have a bass line for that tune , that makes lead players MAD I do on 4 strings , what many wish they could do on 6 CB
Pat Riot Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I didn’t know that was called “shag”. My Dad could do that. My Mom, not so much.
sassnetguy50 Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 They called it Carolina Shag here. Maybe because they lady who showed us was from South Carolina. There is a late 80s movie Shag or The Shag. A National Lampoons meets Dirty Dancing style comedy set in the early 60s to the plot of a girls trip.
Sedalia Dave Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 A dance step that will give your lower legs and feet quite a workout.
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 Don't forget ALABAMA's...'Shaggin on the Blvd' song:
MizPete Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 South Carolinians are born knowing how. It's our State dance.
Utah Bob #35998 Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 It’s been around for a long time and just perfect for 60s tunes.
