El CupAJoe Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could identify General Crook's Pith helmet as it doesn't appear to be the M1880 or later versions of US sun helmet. I suppose I could get one that looks like a 1887 or 1880 model and it would work weather I was dressed as a brit or American Cav, but I like the look of the Crook hat and most military versions I've seen in this style date much later than the 1880's. Thanks in advance.
Rip Snorter Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Considering the time frame you might have good luck checking Victorian era English Colonial Pith helmets or Sola (Solar?) Topee and other names. Steam Punk would be another possibility.

Rip Snorter Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 There were civil service, military and civilian - I haven't seen one quite as flat as in your photo, but flatter than the first two types. May take some digging in obscure places.
Pat Riot Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 If an 1897 pump gun is okay I would think a pre-1900 pith helmet would be okay.

I think the only thing a pith helmet would not be legal for is B-Western which requires a "Felt" hat, since these aren't felt I don't even think it would qualify for this otherwise Gene Hackman's Crook in "Geronimo" would be a fun outfit. apparently his hat sold out of the prop house for $375 + fees after the movie. Colorado Coffinmaker Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Look seriously at "Sun Body Hats" for a Palm Leaf hat. They are amazing.
Irish Pat Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Generals can wear whatever they want to wear. Look at the pictures of George Custer

Imis Twohofon,SASS # 46646 Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 Well, Sunbody does not list a pith helmet that I could find, but they do make a fine, durable hat for a reasonable price. And-STYLE Imis
Utah Bob #35998 Posted February 25, 2022 Posted February 25, 2022 I have never seen another example of that particular style. I suspect he got it from some commercial haberdashery or had it custom made.

Gene Hackman "General George Crook" hat from Geronimo: An American Legend (icollector.com) Hey @PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L, does conforming to the hat requirement when doing a look alike mean that there must be a hat, or that the hat must also be felt, because I'd kinda like to know if this outfit would be B-western approved, or just something I'd have to keep in a non-costume category. I wasn't sure if this phrasing was intended to allow Indian head dresses and the like as long as it was from a movie depiction etc...

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Get ahold of What Price Glory. They used to have all manner of olde style uniform and head gear at very reasonable prices. Good to do business with, too, although I haven't for couple of years now.
Utah Bob #35998 Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 His hat is commercially made civilian. Not a military one at all.
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 I wore my fan hat to EOT a few years ago. After about four stages I had to turn it off as the buzzing was more distracting than the smoke.
