  ..... not an uncommon issue, ... and a good reason to use only ONE measuring device during any project .........  :mellow:

 

      ....... also check your squares for "square"ness .....   :blush:

The head of QA at one of my customers had two different tapes. Both of them with calibration stamps.

 

One for outside measurements and one for inside measurements. His problem wasn't they put in the thing on in the wrong place. It was the thickness of the hook, and the looseness of the slop.

Tape measures with calibration stamps? WTH, we used to just compare to the tape of whoever we ran into first on the site and adjusted as needed.

 

And also knew how to deal with measurements like 30-5/8, leave the line.

 

But the mark of a newbie on the site was the one who let the tape auto-retract and slam shut. They were elongating the hole and throwing off their outside measurement. Every cut got longer and longer, we expected them to go buy a new tape before the next morning.

 

Over the course of a day, it wasn't a big deal; we were framing houses with 2X4s. They just are not that precise. And newbies were good for one more thing, cutting reliefs for the let-ins to square up the building.
