Three Foot Johnson
At least seventeen, but the last ones in each group of two or three that come out all keep looking back, so there are probably more. Makes me wish I had a better camera.
Michigan Slim
Was always a dream of mine to hunt elk. What a regal animal. With my busted legs I know I cant and the cost of an outfitter to get me to them -wow. I will stick with deer on the farm I guess. What a rush it must be to have them around like that! Utah Bob #35998
Yup. If I was a hunter, there are times when I could bag elk from my front porch.
Assassin
I have some elk in the freezer, took a young cow this year. Does that count? I have shot antelope off the porch. Michigan Slim, it's not that hard to get on a group of elk. Just have to use the wind and terrain to your advantage. I'm pretty lucky, I have a friend that has a ranch, 46 miles from the closest paved road. I've never been there without seeing elk. Seeing a group of 400-500 isn't uncommon. It is sometimes difficult to hike up the big hills and the toughest work is loading the critter on the bed of the side by side. Then, there is hunting in a wilderness area, that's a whole different story.
Dantankerous
I have hunted and shot my share of deer and I used to want to hunt elk, bear, and big mountain cats. Somewhere along the line I decided they were all too majestic for me to want to kill and decided to just shoot a lot of steel instead. I love seeing all those wild critters in their home in the mountains. Always gives me a thrill to watch them do their thing.
Pat Riot
I love watching them. I never really wanted to hunt them. In this I am like Dantakerous, but I do like Elk jerky. I just have no desire to hunt them. I do plan to do some deer hunting this fall, mostly because I plan to do it with my muzzleloader. I have always wanted to take a deer with a Pennsylvania rifle. Well, my Kentucky rifle and I have to put it together. My delivery from Laurel Mountain Forge will be here tomorrow. No reason I can’t brown a barrel with a cast on my leg. At least that’s the plan to start with. I have never desired to hunt bear or big cats. I came up close and personal with a cougar once, this one was wrapped in real cougar skin, not a leopard print negligee. I guess we made an agreement to go our separate ways, and we did. I am sure he or she wasn’t as rattled as I was. My wife and I were driving home about 2 weeks ago. She was driving, I was looking around and in a field that normally held a few cows stood a herd of around 30 elk grazing. Very cool. I forgot I had my phone in my hand so I missed getting a photo. With only one moving ankle, my ability to access the backcountry is far less than it was in my younger days. But before I shuffle off this mortal coil I WILL take a pack trip in on horseback to bag an elk cowboy style. This is Bucket List stuff for sure. Wapaloosie73
I love Elk. But I’m raising cattle right now that are as lean as Elk. Good for you! They browse on brush and seedlings and about anything not nailed down. Queen of England has her own private herd too!
Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life
There are about 100 elk that spend every winter about 1/2 mile from my place. They come out in a big hay field every evening to feed. Usually too dark to get a good picture. Come spring they will follow the snow as it melts back to the Mts. Michigan Slim
I've got bears in my place in Michigan. Drawing a tag for our county is impossible for a nonresident. Elk to the northeast but got to be a resident to get your once in a lifetime tag. Them are some nice looking beef you have!
