Does Anyone Remember?

Recommended Posts

Yes I remember those days, just wish I could go back to those days, everything so peaceful, not as many shootings, I grew up in a small town, didn't have to lock the doors at all, now a days you had better lock the doors, so much crime now compared to those days, not as much drugs either, at least where I was.

There are still, plenty of towns like that.

Just look for a town that does not have a fast food franchise nor a Walmart.

I worked at a Gulf Station in 68. I was a senior. Gulf's policy was every customer gets greeted in 60 seconds or less. For a dollars worth of regular, $.27/gal, we had to check the air, battery, water, oil, and wash the front and rear windows. We fixed flats and fan belts on any shift. We had a real mechanic that did everything but engine replacement.

Gas wars brought regular down to $.17/gallon. Minimum wage was $1.50/hr. I got $1.65 as I was the night manager.....I had the keys! The money I made went towards a 55 Chevy and Insurance. I told my wife, girlfriend then, you know before we got married I had at least 3 paychecks in my wallet. She was quick to remind I lived at home........

Yeah I remember 11cents/gallon Super Shell in Dallas during a particularly aggressive "gas war." Remember those? :-)

Dang! Back in1962, my Dad and I were driving from Illinois to Sacramento, where I was to start a summer job (he'd fly back home) after my second year of college. IIRC, "Ethyl" (premium) gas was about 23.9 cents in Chicago. When we got to Colorado and stopped in Estes Park, we were shocked by the price of gas...43.9 cents! :o Of course, they had to truck it all in from who knows where. I'm not sure how good things were "twenty years ago" (1996), but that song sure hit a nerve with me! And how the he# has is gotten to be 50 years ago since I graduated from college? No, I never grew a beard. Bad enough when my grandfather stares back at me in the mirror every morning! Guess I'll go watch an old John Wayne movie on T.V. Wait a minute! I just turned on a movie called "Arizona Raiders", starring Audie Murphy. But the character playing the captain, who's wearing a mustache sounds just like...Ronald Reagan! This was made in 1965. Could it be? :o

I should have mentioned the song by Kenny Rogers "Twenty Years Ago" was released in 1986.

So it was in reference to the mid 60's, which most of us have very fond memories.

That song hits a nerve with me also.

It was a time when a young man could get a set of steak knives or the even rare sets of dinnerware for his "pad". (these went with the recover from the trash couch and the wire spool that was a dinner table.

But I will have to admit......

I worked at a station where you "pumped" the gas up into a glass reservoir with markings every half gallon. It only went to 10 gallons. You then inserted the nozzle into the tank and let the gas drain into it. You carried two rags in your pocket. One for washing windshields and the other for checking the oil level and catching the drips when the engine needed a top off.

I worked at a service station as a college student in the late 1990s. To my knowledge, we were the last one around! Sometimes I drove the tow truck, other times I was the station attendant. We had self service and full service pumps (full service cost more, but you got the fortunate experience of meeting me!). One time a pretty college gal pulled into the full service lane, and had no idea why I was washing her windows, checking her air, filling the gas, etc. She thought I was hitting on her!

I had been married for all of 3 or 4 months; the last thing on my mind was hitting on some gal at the gas station.

In 1956 (I was 15) I worked at a resort/horse stable in California's High Sierras. On of my tasks was to sell gas when someone wanted it. They had the same type of pump. They are in demand today for their decorative value. I have a friend that has several restored pumps in his workshop.

First half of the '60s I was in College. Second half I was busy saving the world from Godless communism and starting a family. My "fond memories" are nothing like the ones most folks talk about.

How'd that work out for you?

Funny how some things never change in your mind. When I had my Honda 350 Scrambler in 1971 I would go to the gas station and fill it for a buck, as it held 3 gallons. Gas went up eventually, and then I got married and started using a credit card for gas. But every once in a while I go to a gas station where I don't have a card, usually when I have let it get down to fumes, and I start to tell the guy, "just give me 10 bucks worth". And then I realize that isn't even 4 gallons.

Forty,

I was in the Navy from 69-73 as a radioman. I qualified to be a corpman and listed it on my preferences but the Navy felt my skills were better suited as a radioman.

Instead of Vietnam, I ended up in Morocco on the edges of the desert called SIdi Yahia (sp?) for 16 months. It was so 'away from civilization' that some Vietnam vets were wanting to go back to Vietnam just to get out of that hot hole.

But my childhood and teenage years do have fond memories, with a few more from my military service.

Hearing what some Vets experienced during those years and some health issues they now have associated with overseas service, I can understand why some don't have very fond memories of those years.
