Subdeacon Joe Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 US government sends 14,000 draft notices to men born in 1800s: ‘We’re really sorry’ The U.S. Selective Service System began receiving calls from confused citizens last week when it mistakenly ordered 14,000 men, all born in the 1800s, to register for the military draft, The Associated Press reported Friday. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation took responsibility for the glitch, which occurred during a bulk records transfer. “We made a mistake, a quite serious selection error,” (REALLY??? Whodathunkit!)Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jan McKnight said Thursday, according to the AP. A clerk failed to select the century when producing the records. The intention was to search for men born between 1993 and 1997. The Selective Service didn’t catch the error because the state used a two-digit code to indicate the year of birth, agency spokesman Pat Schuback said, according to the AP. The youngest of the deceased men would have turned 117 this year. Families of the men who received the notices were told to ignore them, and the agency posted an apology on its website Thursday. “We’re really sorry,” McNight said. “We apologize.” So, did any of you get yours?

Jeez, that's the Y2K Bug, and they're just now figuring this out? Everybody else fixed that 15 years ago.
Tucker McNeely Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Must be the same group of IT folks that can't find the IRS's emails.
Utah Bob #35998 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Forty got one. He's under the back porch tryin to cut off his trigger finger right now.
DocWard Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Uh... Where's great-grandpa? Looks like he's got some mail...
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Did they get to vote first?
Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Got mine in 1963........or was it 1863, can't remember
Litl Red Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I understand that only Democrats got the notifications. They were using the active voter registration lists.
Birdgun Quail, SASS #63663 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 I know some of you here were born in the 1800's and it's about time you registered. One's under the porch whittling on his finger.
Billy Bristol Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 why would it be the department of transportation? If someone didn't have a drivers license then they don't get a notice?
Sparky Nelson Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 why would it be the department of transportation? If someone didn't have a drivers license then they don't get a notice? A lot of times government agencies share records so they can do cross references and see if they missed anybody. Lots of people have a driver's license, but they just forgot to register with SS.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 OK, hypothetical question. Say I just came over from Mexico, via the Paydirt Highway. I go in and get my food stamps, register for Welfare and get a driver's license. Do I still have to register for the draft?
Trailrider #896 Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Well, there are folks who accuse me of having been born in 1842, and that I was with Crook at the Rosebud... I don't recall getting a draft notice. Must have gotten something as I had to report for a physical when I turned 18. But I dodged the draft...held up my right hand right after graduating from college in '65, and the colonel swore me in, and Dad pinned my "butter bars" on my blue blouse. Wonder what would have happened to those who got sent the notice if the Gub'mint hadn't caught the error?
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Forty got one. He's under the back porch tryin to cut off his trigger finger right now. I never got one. Took a commission out of college and never saw a draft notice. Had a buddy get one in the mail the day after he got out after six years. Always figured that was a joke though because his mom was the head of the local draft board, but she denied it.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 And why would I cut off a perfectly adequate nose-picker and butt-scratcher. huh?
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Yeah, Utah, he (Forty Rod) can't hit Dixie with a long gun, anyway. Heck fir, he can't hit Dixie with a short gun either. We don't know just what he can hit, cause he ain't hit nuttin' yet, that goes clang....
