Something you cain't hardly do without........

Recommended Posts

I know, for 90% of you it's probably yer cell phone. If somebody stole mine I probably wouldn't miss it for a week.

My CD player quit working a couple of weeks ago (actually it works, the transport konked and won't eject the CD) . Took it to the shop this afternoon, they pulled the stereo, will be FRIDAY before I get it back. Now there's only so much a body can bear. You can take my cell phone, my puter, even my morning coffee, but no sound in my truck is almost too much. Not to mention the clock I look at every few minutes (even tho I wear a watch). Ima tellin' U, it just sucks. Even my old '69 Chevy pickup I inherited in high school had an AM radio (shortly replaced by an AM/FM 8 track :P )

Bottles, I need a drink. Keep 'em coming until Friday! :o:huh:

Well just stream the music over your smart phone!

(I don't know exactly what that means, but it sounds good.)

Ain't got one, don't want one. I've threatened to DC my flip phone! Hate phones in general, ESPECIALLY cell phones.

JHC (what still misses his Motarola bag phone that actually TALKED!) :(

Sirius (XM) radio is giving everyone two free weeks as a promo, started yesterday...if your radio can pick up XM...

Portable CD players are darn cheap these days.

Whole stereo is gone! Hole in the dash! May have to break out the MP3 (tho I don't like driving with headphones).

I won't say I can't live without it, but the Sirius XM radio in my truck, has flat spoiled me. You can have my cell phone.

Something I can't live with out... Hmmm... Family aside, probably coffee. I WISH I could live without my cell phone, but need it for work. Nothing I like more than going camping so I can turn it off.

On the work front:

IT pushed a SW update that crashed my computer, and then they fried my backup on re-install. I now have NOTHING - lost 25+ years of files gone - all internet addresses, all contacts, all documents, all presentations, all spreadsheets, historical documents, pictures, videos, test results, speeches,,,etc, etc, etc.

Brought to me by the same folks that did the ACA website.

Bottles - leave the bottle, or two...........

And, I thought I'd be lost without my pocket knife.

Just a day before an extended trip to Japan to provide technical and functional support, present some new ideas regarding an enhanced spare parts dynamic, interfacing with internal and external systems, and to conduct some classes, my laptop hard drive failed. I hadn't backed up in about six weeks (real smart), so all that stuff I needed was on the drive. I was literally in a state of shock. My client's local IT support couldn't retrieve my data off the damaged drive. Fortunately, I remembered this "old wive's tale" about freezing a damaged hard drive and retrieving the data from the damaged, ice-cold drive and I suggested that to the IT wizard. It was late in the day and I was going out to try to find some dry ice, but she decided to stay late and tossed the drive into the break room's refrigerator freezer. After about 30 minutes in the freezer and an additional 4 more trips in and out of the freezer, she had retrieved all my lost data to the new drive. She was my heroine and I had large bouquet of flowers delivered while I was flying to Japan the next day.

SO, unless your story is old news and you've already disposed of the damaged drives, have you given it a try? That is, pack your drive(s) in dry ice and see if it will cough up your data?

Cat,

I appreciate the the thought and example. The problem is much more severe, we are talking several levels beyond the normal hard disk recovery. This was a highly encrypted DoD hard drive - can't say more about the difficulty involved.

I used the example to answer the OP about something that I cannot do without- I expect a lot us have computers at work with reams of files, contacts, etc, that we use daily, but don't necessarily realize how dependent we have become on them.

It happened Monday this week and I have always had backup, but it failed this time in others hands (centralization - the socialist way - I could not do back up on my own as I had always done) and I am truly crippled at work.

Thanks,

Harvey

Yes, exactly. I am so very sorry about that. Irretrievable material.

Go to Spotify.com on your computer , sign up its free. You can then add a playlist, I have about ten so far, for example I have one named "dustys saddle"

You can then search music by song title or artist, for example type "Waylon Jennings" you will see a list of everything Waylon. Hold down your control key and tag all the Waylon songs you want then "drag them to you playlist"

Each one of mine has about 20 hours of music, hit "shuffle " and you have tunes. I plug my computer into my stereo Then download the Spotify app on your phone and you have hundreds of hours tuned with you that YOU picked out!

I have an old Panasonic radio that I keep in my truck in case I break down, the battery is dead, and want to listen to some tunes while waiting for a tow.

They still make em and they are cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-RF-P50-Pocket-Radio-Silver/dp/B00004T1XE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391086907&sr=8-1&keywords=panasonic+rf-p50

Those little radios work great and you can get them for <$10 shipped if you catch them on sale. I have 2 of them and one of the Sony that is similar (the Panasonic seems to get a little better reception). Keep one in each vehicle (mine & the girlfriend's) and one in the house. Nice little emergency backup.
