Could Use Some Advice From Our St. Louis Area Pards

Recommended Posts

I just received a job offer in St. Louis. I've decided to take it. I will probably be renting an appartment for a while until Uno arrives. I will probably be out there in the mid August time frame with Uno arriving in early September. Are there any places you can recommend, either to live or stay away from?

I'm not too keen on living in the city proper nor do I want to live across the bridge. Other than that, I'm open.

Thanks much for your help.

So whatcha gonna be doin' there, CK~? :)

Same company, different area. Since things are "winding down" here in Cali, I thought I'd better get out before everyone else does. PM me if you want "the rest of the story".

Any minute now I expect to hear news that California will be taxing ex-pats.

They've actually done it before.

"Across the bridge"? Which bridge? The one(s) leading into Illinois or the one(s) leading into St. Charles County, MO? I can certainly understand not wanting to live in IL, but St. Charles is nice. O'Fallon, MO (There's an O'Fallon, IL, too) is in St. Charles County ~25-30 miles west of the St. Louis City limits. You'll find you get more bang for your real estate buck$ in St. Charles, too.

Where's your office?

Welcome to the area. Give a shout when you get here and we'll get a few cowboys together for some lunch and to meet you.

I would agree that the Missouri side is the best for St. Louis workers. It has been a long time since I was

in that area. So I am not one to give advice. Hope the heat and humidity don't do you in. It is a MOIST heat.

Good luck to you and Uno in your new environs.

You will be close to the Sparta Complex and some big time shoots and a little further west of Sparta, you can visit POPEYE IN CHESTER!

Afraid I can't help ya much Kris, since I've never been that far east in my life, but I do wanna congratulate you and wish you and Uno all the best in yer new home (when ya get there of course)!

St Louis county is pretty big. It would help to know where in St. Louis your office will be. St. Charles County is a nice place to live as is Warren County which is a little further west. Chesterfield or South County area is nice too. If you need a place to stay for a few days while you look, wife and I have a guest room and are 10 minutes from I-70.

Thank you so much for the offers and advice. I appreciate it.

I forgot about "the other" bridge. I was thinking about the one across the Mississippi. I was only in East St. Louis Ill. once. That's all I needed.

The office is in the near vicinity of Lambert St. Louis airport. I don't have an exact city or address but I know that's really close because I've heard planes taking off while on conference calls.

I'm still trying to work out some logistics with the company because the move will be on my own time and money. As I get more details and an idea of when they will release me here, I'll let you know.

Thank y'all again. I knew this would be the best place to ask. :D

Not sure what kinds of neighborhoods you come from Kris, and what you like. I suggest looking within the boundaries of I-170, I-270 and I-64. Pretty broad area I know, but some nice neighborhoods in there. Creve Couer, Olivette, Brentwood and Maryland Heights could be options (and maybe Kirkwood on the southern end). Ladue and Clayton are nice and can be pricey, but may not seem so to you coming from California. (My mom lives in Ladue.) A commute up I-170 isn't too bad. I know nothing of Florissant these days, but you might ask around.

Much of suburban St. Louis expanded along I-64 and I-70 west of I-270 over the last 40 years. Personally, I wouldn't live west of north/south I-270 as the traffic is dreadful (to me, and I lived in New York and Washington DC)!

Good luck!

That's how we identify furriners, by their mispronunciation of the state's name.

Like in "Care-Oh" Illinois or "New Mad< Rid" Mo or "Hay-Tie" Mo...

What a great addition to Mizzourah!

Welcome!

Thanks!! My future boss is so excited to have me on board she offered to help us find a place to live also. She's trying to wrangle a way to have the company fly me out a couple of weeks early to get acquainted with the area and the new team.

I hate leaving "home" but I'm so looking forward to this. She seems like a really nice, honest person. That will be so refreshing. The environment in my current office is so bad I dread going to work every day. I'm not prone to tears but I've come home from work crying a couple of times lately.

Enough of that mess. We get to look forward to a bright future in a new place. :D :D :D :D

My good pal Alamo Kid has an apartment near Page & Lindbergh. It's probably about 15 minutes south of the airport. It's a nice complex with a pool. For the area the rent seems very reasonable. I know he's lived there ever since I've known him (and I've known him 13years).

Thanks for the info. My office will be near Lambert St. Louis so, at least for now, I would rather stay in that area.

Now my question is, how bad would the drive be from a place like O'Fallon, Maryland Heights, Webster Groves or U. City? I'm trying to narrow down my search area a bit.

Thanks much again,

CK

Well, O'Fallon, MO is a straight shot down I-70 to Lambert Field ~20 miles; Webster Groves ~10-15 miles; Maryland Heights ~10 miles and U-City also about 10 miles, depending on exactly where you start.

I spent..... a lot... of years as LEO in U-City so I know all the downsides there and I can't recommend it (I was not allowed to say that to prospective residents when I still worked there). There are some nice areas but I, personally, wouldn't live there. Maybe just too many bad memories and thugs that remember me there. There ARE a couple cowboy shooters that live in U-City.

I hope that helps.

Wonderful!! Thanks,

I have heard from a co-worker that I should try to live "outside the box". 1) it will be more affordable and 2) less traffic. This, coming from someone who lives in Arnold. We'll have to see what I can find.

Thanks for the great info.
