Cemetery
What types, make and models, of rifles are used in Plainsmen? Thinking of getting something.
Dubious Don #56333
H&R Handi rifle in cowboy calibers, H&R Buffalo Classic, High walls, lo walls, Sharps of every variety, trapdoors, Sniders the list goes quite a long. For a starting out gun that's very reasonably priced, you can't go wrong with a H&R Handy rifle. If you choose 45-70 you'll want to use reduced loads. 38-55 is also a good choice. Wyandot Jim
Hey Cemetary, How ya been? Was good meeting you at CAC. I use a H&R Officers Model 1873 Trapdoor in 45-70. It is hard to beat someone with a 38-55 Handy Rifle that has ejectors. I can shoot mine pretty fast and ya get a lot more style points with the Trapdoor. The problem is that not many matches have the Plainsman side match, which is a shame IMHO. Take care, Wyandot Picture of mine also a Snider Enfield my Son brought back from Afganistan. http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk67/wyandotjim/1306690093.jpg My Ruger Old Armys http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk67/wyandotjim/1315520973.jpg
Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217
Howdy Pard, If you want to be a contender without a lot of practice, a handi-rifle is fastest. As I cannot hope to be a contender, I use a Browning Low Wall because it is so delicate and pretty. Mine looks like the "Traditional Hunter" at the bottom of this page. Doc Coles SASS 1188
If you actually want a historic rifle, the trapdoor is fast and the rolling block works well due to its camming action.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
I have an 1885 & an H & R both in 38-55, both for plainsman & long range --Dawg
Grizzly Adams 3674
Sharps. Because when I shoot plainsman, it's just about the history. Not interested in being a contender with a rifle that has nothing to do with that history, IMHO Some plainsman matches offer two categories for those shooting traditional arms, and those shooting the handi thingy....... Other fine choices include the Low/High Wall, Trapdoor Springfield, Rolling Block, and the Snider.

Clueless Bob
I use either my Burnside or the wife's Maynard. Yea I got to deal with a cap, but you can't get a much more traditional cartridge than those!!! LOL

Dirty Dan Dawkins
I like a Rolling Block with 22" barrel. I do a mix of a double judo chop with what Talon calls a "French twist" to extract. I shoot one handed while pulling my reload. I have a video but dont know how to load it. Marauder has it as well. I hang in there with H&R's pretty well.
