Dangit, another one followed me home. At least I know the caliber on this one. 7mm saddle ring carbine rolling block. Excellent rifling, will make a nice shooter. Side matches? I can cast the bullets and load my own. BUT, can this use modern 7mm mauser or 7x57 like privi? I'm thinking no due to age and I better load my own, what says the rogues gallery?

I got some 5744, and I need to order a mould. Rip, I don't think this is the Egyptian one, Lil different parts and it has the Uruguay cartouche...I've always wanted a carbine, now the fun begins!

Did see the cartouche, knew about the Egyptian and I know there was a 7mm Mauser in the period, just curious what cartridge you ended up with.  Are you going to do a chamber cast?  Very nice / fun gun & project!

I would definitely make a chamber cast (Cerro Safe) to check the headspace. The SAAMI standard for the 7 x 57 (7mm Mauser) is a tad shorter than the chambers of some of the Rolling Blocks. Not short enough to cause a problem with new ammo, but probably would cause fired cases to stretch with repeated resizing with the sizing die screwed all the way down. Basic solution is simply to back the die off and turn it down until the resized case will just chamber. Basically just fireforming the new brass.

Question: Does the hammer drop to a safety position when the block is rolled forward? Some of the N.Y. State militia .50-70's had this feature, but I don't know about the 7mm M1902's.

Load your own.  Why risk wrecking a good gun and / or an acceptable (but not great) face?

Yes stamped springfield on receiver, marked remington onn tang....this is correct

Yep that is what I thought I remembered. It’s not the New York State RB. It’s the Springfield model 1871 RB which added the half cock on closing the block which was a change from the SF model 1870.  Remington incorporated that feature in the NYS rolling block contract.

Got some privi 7mm mauser from aim and loaded...fit like a glove. So what the hell, fired on off. Man, she has a bark, guessing cause she is a little carbine,lol..impressive. casing had no signs of stress , splitting ,bulging or burns..has powder around neck but nondeformation. Much better than i expected. To be honest, i didnt know what to expect..very happy, now I'm gonna load them down a bit. Just got the mold, do gonna make some bullets, brother Grizz is gonna hook me up with brass so we are in!!!!

I myself amassed quite the pile of old oddball shooters and over the last few years have transitioned from Accumulator to Enabler. I've been thinning the herd, ENABLING others to get bit and bit hard by the funky-ole-gun-syndrome. You're welcome! LOL.

Anyway

 

The Rolling block, like many guns of the era transitioned between the black powder era and Smokeless. Remington had issues with some frame stretching so they made the frame beefier. As I recall, they didn't change the patent date or otherwise mark the receivers in any way and I'm too lazy to research it. My advice would be reduced loads. 5744 is as good a powder as any since Trailboss isn't going to appear until next year. Maybe. They say.

Gotta see what powder I got, I sold most of my trailboss to a pard here locsl but I may have a jug left in the garage. I knowni got the likes of 4064,varget,4895,,3031 but those might be  too hard...im.wondering if the holy black would be a bad choice with a nice cast bullet? Any thoughts on BP?

many years back , I got to playing with 6.5x50 . 6.5 Jap , Accurate 4350 , was showing a lesser pressure to other powders 

 

 it did well in the Type 38 carbines and rifles I should have a Accurate book in the shop I will look in the AM hope it did not get ruined in the twister

looked through some other books not much data for lead in 7x57 

did not do a search on the web for data 

depending on bullet weight , it might be time to go out in the weeds and do a tad of wildcattin'

Appreciate the effort, found a few loads on the Ole interweb, I got a couple boxes of the privi, shoots fine, nonpressure or any signs of bad. Gonna use the cases as they get fireformed. Gotta see if she likes 140g or 170g bullets. Still need to order a 170 mold.
