J.S. Sooner, SASS #73526
This happened last month at a local shoot. Simple stage: Shooter is in an age category. Rifle and SG on rack. Pistols holstered. Three pistol targets continuous Nevada sweep and three rifle targets continuous Nevada sweep, 4 shotgun KD’s. All shot from behind rack. Order is rifle, pistols, shotgun. Shooter starts with rifle, shoots clean. Pulls 1st pistol shoots four rounds then holsters 1st pistol, hammer down on spent cartridge, draws 2nd pistol and continues Nevada sweep on next target in sequence. Spotters and RO tells shooter he still has one in the 1st pistol. Shooter pulls 1st pistol and hits final pistol target, no misses on pistol targets, holstered and completes stage hitting all 4 shotgun KD’s. What is the call? The Rainmaker, SASS #11631
Is this a continuous Nevada Sweep (for 10 rds) or two separate 5 rd sweeps? I would think the pistol order would be the same as rifle (10 rd continuous sweep), in which case, if the first pistol fired 4 rds and holstered and the second fired 5 rds continuing the sweep and the first pistol was redrawn and fired at the correct (center) target... no call. If the pistol sweeps are two separate 5 rounders and he proceeded with the second 5 rd sweep after not finishing the first... procedural.

I thought it was a no call as did the RO running the timer. Another RO that usually runs a posse was with us due to having a smaller monthly turnout seemed to be frustrated the shooter was allowed to holster the 1st pistol after only shooting 4 rounds. The hammer was down on an empty, not cocked. If cocked it would have been a DQ. Just wanted to clarify holstering a pistol that still had one live round was okay. Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
One of the clearest statements of the legality of holstering a revolver when the hammer is down on a fired round is in the basketball traveling rule definition: Quote you may move, restage, or re-holster when the hammer is down on an empty chamber or expended case. There is a slightly different way of saying the same thing (IMHO) in the Safe to Move section for revolvers: Quote Revolvers are considered SAFE for movement (in hand, while holstering, or while moving through a stage) and SAFE to leave the shooter’s hand in the following conditions ONLY: - Hammer fully down on an empty chamber. - Hammer fully down on an expended round. A revolver may not be originally staged in this condition, but may be restaged in this condition. Perhaps the very last clause of that last sentence would be more obvious if it also mentioned holstering a revolver while hammer is on an expended round, as well as restaging it. LIKE: "A revolver may not be originally holstered or staged in this condition, but may be re-holstered or restaged in this condition." good luck, GJ
J.S. Sooner, SASS #73526
I believe the other RO may have been confused because of Gunfighter rules stating holstering revolvers to engage other targets is prohibited. I know this statement is intended for split pistol sequences and/or shot from different locations. If a gunfighter had a brain fart, shot 9 rounds and holstered both pistols, hammer down on spent cartridges they should be able to draw and shoot the last round before next firearm is shot. o A Gunfighter may not holster revolvers with the intent to engage another revolver sequence.
