I put my faith in the people

But the people let me down

So I turned the other way

And I carry on, anyhow

Toolin’ down the highway,

In a new Cadilac,

I got a fire fox in the front,

I got three more in the back,

Sportin’ short dresses,

Wearin’ spike heal shoes,

Smokin’ Lucky Strikes,

And wearin’ nylons too.

BINGO!!

How many times must I tell you baby,

How many brides I’ve got to cross?

How many times must I explain myself,

’Fore I can talk to the boss?

I loved this band when I was a kid.  They had kind of a cult following.  Great talent, and a different sound.  Cut some records but never quite hit the big-time.  This is the first verse of one of their songs.

I teach a class of phony principles of mathematics
In a fine Northeastern school.
I've read the great philosophies of Plato, Christ and Socrates
And I live by most their rules,

But at 3 o'clock I start to get the blues

Spirit: I Got A Line On You

That one is part of our current act.

Hey Slim!!  That’s a Roger Miller song!  Can’t recall the name!!!

Y’all try this one!!

The festival was over,

And the boys were planning for a fall,

The cabaret was quiet,

Except for the drilling in the wall.

The curfew had been lifted and the gambling wheel shut down.

Anyone with any sense had already left town.

Still have the Spirit album The 12 Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus. Every cut on the album is good. My favorite is Animal Zoo.

They were a pretty decent show back in the day.  Didn’t manage to follow up the one big hit, but that’s probably a management/promotion problem!

I knew the song as soon as I saw it. I just haven't been keeping up recently.

Here's an appropriate one.

In this dirty old part of the city
Where the sun refused to shine

I just saw today that their guitarist had passed, so it seemed fitting.

Little Wing!

Jimi Hendrix, Derek and The Dominos, (featuring Skydog on guitar) and Stevie Ray Vaughn that I can think of right off the top of my head!!

EDIT:

The Derek and The Dominos version was recorded the day after Hendrix passed.  They had just completed the Layla Project album and when they heard the news, they went back in the studio, gathered around one mic in the middle of the room and recorded the song in one take.

You got it. My favorite version of Little Wing is on the Jimi Hendrix in the West album performed live at the Isle of Wight. Just the raw energy of the performance awes me every time I hear it.

@DocWard, Hint, I love a great story teller. Tom T Hall & Roger Miller are 2 of the best at it.

I been warped by the rain

Driven by the snow

I'm drunk and dirty doncha know

And I'm still, oh I'm still

Out on the road late at night

I see my pretty Alice in every headlight
