Never heard it!!  Great band!!

Interesting the singer on that tune was with them for one album and Donald Fagen took over the vocals.

Brooklyn owes the Charmer..

Steely Dan

Yeah!  Didn't really sound like what we're used to hearing from Steely Dan!

This might be one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard.

Your day breaks. Your mind aches.

You find that all the words of kindness linger on,

When she no longer needs you.

She wakes up. She makes up.

She takes her time and doesn’t feel she has to hurry.

She no longer needs you.

No takers?? I figured this one would go quickly!!

How about this one?

I keep thinking that I’m lonely

but it’s only missing you inside

Days that we were once together

Seems we’ll never come alive

Too Easy! Hands down my favorite southern rock song.

'Dreams I'll Never See'

Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet and more. My preference is for the Molly Hatchet version.

Honestly, I always felt that Molly Hatchet butchered a REALLY great song!  The original arrangement with Sky Dog’s slide guitar in the second half of the instrumental absolutely steals the show and with the absence of the last verse, (which is repeated) the whole premise of the song is lost!

YMMV!

You're not the first person I've heard say as much, and I respect the opinion. I always thought they just took it and did it differently. As a recording act (as opposed to an actual cover band or bar band, etc...), I wouldn't understand covering a song and plan on trying to do it note-for-note, phrase for phrase. A few covers come to mind, from The Power Station covering 'Bang a Gong,' to Dwight Yoakum covering 'Little Sister.' Do it, and make it yours.

It probably helps that the Molly Hatchet version was the first I heard, and the only one I knew for many years, existing on vinyl in my collection and on cassette in my car. Besides, they had the coolest album covers.

I’m a fan of Molly Hatchet! Whiskey Man and Flirtin’ With Disaster are two of my favorites!!

Unlike you, I cut my teeth on the Brothers version, so I was disappointed when MH released their version.  Yes, they “made it theirs” but in doing so, they killed the feel and message, for me.

”Pull myself together,

Put on a new face.

Climb down off the hilltop, baby,

Get back in the race!!”

I mean, that’s the message!  There’s the hope!  No matter how down you are, you can still take the world by the scruff of the neck and drag it around to your side of the fence!!

And then there’s the orchestration and arrangement.  No comparison there!  My band covers it closely. The guys take pride in closely reproducing the arrangement and the instrumentals, but we STILL “make it ours”!!!

I don't think there is a wrong answer, it is purely subjective. Since I was so familiar with the Molly Hatchet version, the first time I heard the Allman Brothers, there was a definite disconnect, that it was completely different. At first, I didn't care for it because of that, it definitely took getting used to.

The lyrics you quote are in the Molly Hatchet version at the end, along with some additional lyrics. Interestingly, when I went to double check the lyrics, I checked several different lyric finders, and none of them could agree on what they are. To an extent, they're a partial turnaround (I think that would be the correct term, at any rate), but I have always still considered it a positive, that:

"Cause I've got dreams

I've got my dreams,

To remember, Lord yeah..."

I didn't mean to imply that a band couldn't play it close and "make it theirs," but when recording, most successful covers I think of take the song in a different direction. I can think of half a dozen such off the top of my head.

I looked it up ‘cause I couldn’t remember the artists. That was released during a period that I just didn’t get into!  Not a bad song, just too, I don’t know, soft for my tastes.

 I won’t spill it!

Doc!  You stay outta’ this one! I’m dying to get back to rehearsals so that we can work this up!

Hey! Fellas have you heard the news?

Ya’ know Annie’s back in town!

Won’t take long, just watch and see,

All the men’ll lay their money down,

The style is new, but the pay’s the same,

As it was so long ago.

But from her eyes, a different smile,

Like that of one who knows!

Lookout, Mama, there's a white boat coming up the river

Its got a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail

I think you better call John

It don't look like they're here to deliver the mail

And its less than a mile away

I hope they didn't come to stay

Its got numbers on the front and a gun and its making big waves

Bingo!!!!

My mom and dads song when they were dating in the 30’s. I think the most popular version was by the Platters in the 50’s.

So take a good look at my face!

If you look closer it’s easy to trace,

Baby’s into running around

hanging with the crowd

Putting your business in the street

Talking out loud

Saying you bought her this and that

And how much you done spent

I swear she must believe it’s all heaven sent

Hey boy  you better bring that chick around

Sometimes you fly so high

you can't find a place to land

Got money in the bank

And a drink in your hand

When the love gets low

Someone's gonna lose

'Cause our love is driftin'
