Any die cast car collectors on here?

So, inherited my fathers die cast car collection.  Mostly 50's, 60's and 70's hot rods/muscle cars/drag racing.  I've had them on display, but we're looking to downsize, so 650+ car's are not part of that plan.   I have all the boxes and papers.  Anyone have any experience in this collecting world?  Best way to liquidate them without just giving them away?  Ebay "lot"?!LOL  They'll fill up the better part of a pickup bed in their boxes:rolleyes:  There used to be places that specialized in stuff like this where I lived, but I've not found any local shops here in the Redneck Riviera.

Holy Cow! :D

I started collecting 1:37 scale die cast cars years ago. I have 4 of them. 1:37 scale is hard to find.

You might want want to go on EBay and search out someone that sells these and ask them if they want to buy the entire lot.

I have to ask...any 1:37 scale cars in the lot that you want to sell? Not interested in any other scale. Just 1:37.

Here are some other resources to check out:

This site might be an eye opener for you. After reading this you may wish to sell the cars yourself on EBay or elsewhere.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm dreading.  I realize they're not worth but a fraction of what he paid.  Thanks for the links.

I'd have to dig out and unpack the boxes to know if any of them are 1:37.  It hasn't come to that.  Yet.  What's the attraction to that particular scale?

I sell on Ebay, but that many listings would take forever and frankly I'm willing to take a lot less to not have to deal with that.  Just boxing the damn things back up will take a day or better.

There is always the outside chance that when we sell the house the buyer will want them:rolleyes:  yeah right.

Lot's of 1:37 here: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=1%3A37+die+cast&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=budweiser+holiday+plate+set&_osacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0

My son started an internet charity this year. He enlisted the help of four other members of a group of parents that tweet about raising toddlers. He wanted to do something for underprivileged children. Remembering how much he and his twins enjoyed Hot Wheels and how affordable they are they decided to try to collect them and donate them through Toys for Tots. They set what they thought was an ambitious goal of 2000 cars. They didn’t get 2000 they got over 5000. That will bring a lot of smiles Christmas morning.

I am  so proud of him

I bought a "Woody" Surf wagon in 1:37 scale. That kind of set off my interest. I do not spend a lot of time looking but when I come across die cast cars I look them over and snag any 1:37's.

Please don't go through a lot of trouble looking on my behalf. It's not that big of a deal.

You're welcome for the links. I think I would try and sell the lot to a collector. What a headache to list and track all those on EBay. Gives me a headache thinking about it.

What is the most common scale? Is 1:37 smaller or bigger than most?

Most common are 1:24, 1:36 and 1:48, I believe. I think 1:37 are accidents.

I would be careful about thinking that they are not very valuable. Some die cast are very valuable. I just wonder if some auction house might be interested or have someone who knows what they are doing in these collectables.  Might be worth some digging into.   Good luck

Probably not going to just load them up and drop them off somewhere, despite that being the easy button.LOL

That's a really neat display and it's shame it has to be split up. Unfortunately that's what happens when your family inherits your hobby. Fortunately all I inherited from my dad was a half-dozen guns and a few model kits.

This was an odd accumulation thing he did.  He only ever displayed a few of them, the rest were just stored in their original boxes, largely unopened.  He had a similar plate collection that we donated some of and gave some to friends that had an interest.  He used to joke I'd be "stuck with dealing with all that".  The die cast we put them out to fill the space we had, because I like cars and racing and I'd like to think he would have liked that, but the reality is, we aren't going to have the space to take them with us.

Probably.  I'm pretty remote to any metroplis that supports those type of places, so distance is my nemesis here.  Looks like those places will want a spreadsheet of what's there.  That in itself will be quite a bit of work.

Howdy,

Maybe put them in groups on ebay?

A group of Mustangs, a group of motorcycles, a group of...….

So one ad would sell maybe eight to 20 pieces at once.

Good luck.

Best

CR

My doctor is a collector of cars like this and I have built him quite a few display cases. I’m going to PM you my email address and if you could provide me with closer photos and a list of some kind he may be your huckleberry.
