Reclaimed Shot

Recommended Posts

I have loaded shells with everything re-claimed except the primers (even the used wad)!

They pattern just fine for what I use them for. I would not try this for Turkey or Goose hunting, mainly because I'm shooting at a live target.

Put your re-loads on paper.

Every load and every gun shoots different.

I only use it in SASS, where all we have to do is 'dust' a large steel target.

Reclaim will not pattern reliably, from the damage to the shot from previous firing.

OLG

That was my thinkin' OLG...looks ok after washed & graphited but  not willing to chance it !!

I’ve seen some beautiful reclaimed shot, that I wouldn’t hesitate to use on clays. I’m confident it would pattern just fine. With that said, I’ve also seen some real junk.

I use reclaimed in my cowboy loads, and my trap loads.  But I mix it with some *new* shot to help it through the reloading press.

biggest problem I have found is the lack of cleaning and graphite.   Tends to not flow through the bar like new shot and can hang up or make the bar hard to move.  Have to take the thing apart and clean, something I do not think I ever had to with new shot.   Did dump a bunch of baby powder in on top of the shot but not sure if it helped or not.   Will keep on using it because of cost and the amount of shot we go through in this sport.

i only use it for SASS as well , ive found factory to work best for trap-skeet-sporting clays these days , im not getting any better and i have a bunch so im shootin it up before my kids get it ,

i do load my SASS ammo exclusively with reclaimed and it dusts the steel just fine , i cannot see why a good shooter couldnt make it work in the other venues just fine ,

I pattern any new powder/wad/reclaimed lead loads, before loading a lot for practice and monthly matches

Minimum of 4, 2 for each barrel on the SxS.

Hand weigh the reclaimed lead to ensure accurate data, since the lead is a mix of 9, 8 and 7.5.

Pellet count on the pattern targets vary up to 50 pellets.

Pattern percentage on 9” paper plate at 12 yds, cylinder choke,  varies from 40% to 65%.

Stray pellets can be 10” from edge of 9” paper plate.

With that said, when I have a miss on a KD it is due to my aim. If the front sight is near the KD, it is a hit.

All I use is reclaimed shot. I don't shoot skeet or trap so I can't comment on how it works for those venues. I quit buying new shot years ago when new shot hit the above $40 per bag cost and I was getting reclaimed for $20-$25 per bag.

There's only 1 store here that carries new shot and the last time I was in there it was $45.95 a bag. The last reclaimed I got was $30-$35 per bag. I use powdered graphite on each bag of the reclaimed. A small squeeze tube from Ace will cover 4+ bags and it flows through my MEC just fine.
