FYI Colt 1911A1

I just got a Inside scoop from a Military Arms Dealer Buddy of mine .

The Government is Releasing 40,000 1911A1's for sale to the Public in the next few months .

So you wild bunch guys keep your eyes and ears open .

This will also drive down the Collector price on these guns .

So if you have that safe queen you have been saving for retirement.

Now is a good time to sell it.

Just sayin

It's been in the works for quite a while now, but I don't think the folks with collector examples should worry too much.  The majority (vast?) of these 1911's will be mixmasters, and a lot of them will be in rough shape.   There won't be many primo examples.

Any speculation regarding what the price range might be?

In 1974, I purchased my first .45 ACP (1943 Ithaca 1911-A1) from an MCSO deputy who had carried it in Korea & Vietnam...95%+ condition...for $75.00.

(pre-divorce asset disposal sale).

My issue 1911 was a piece of rattling junk.  Fortunately, it always went "bang".  Unfortunately, it shot garbage can sized groups.

I own two modern 1911s that are tight and shoot well.  Not holding my breath for the surplus stuff that may well also be junk.

not to start a ruckus , but only to clarify for my own edification , the 1911 was the arm that was of the vintage we think of for 'wild bunch' the M1911A1 was a modification between wwI & wwII , these were made by colt but lots of other subcontractors were far more proliferous , is the 1911A1 accepted in wild bunch ? are there not some restrictions as to what is accepted regarding sights and such ?

again just asking because im not up on this and have considered this over the last couple years , always thought my only "qualifying weapon" would be my vintage colt 1918 black army without buying one of the new 'replica 1911s' , if i can shoot my kimber or sig i guess i have things i would feel less apprehensive about using , both of those have iron sights but they are tritium night sights , is there a standard to meet ?

Maybe its Me ?

Maybe its the gun ?

I have always been able to hit anything I shoot at with a 1911.

I have (8)  1911's ,  Including my Grandfathers 1911a1 Remington Rand he carried in WWll.

He had the pistol given to him at the time he was discharged from the Army .

Its now my 1911a1.

Its all stock including the barrel.

And I can hit everything I shoot at with her .

It dont matter if I use My Kimber ,my Colt , One of my two Rugers , My Remington R1,

My RIA  or  my Armscore .

I can shoot just as good with my Grandfathers Remington Rand .

So for this Old rattle can ,

I would bet my life on her .

Just sayin .

Kid, any 1911 or 1911A1 that was military issue is going to fine for Wild Bunch traditional or modern.  More modern 1911's with some (but not all) more modern features are acceptable for modern only.  And some modern features render the gun not legal for WB.

Look here. The tritium sights are not legal for even Modern category but are easily swapped out.

Rooster, not saying I can't shoot a 1911, just that the one I was issued was on its last legs.  At one time, I did bet my life on it.  I just found anM16 eliminated the need to get that close and personal with some bad hombres.

When the CMP finally gets these pistols, I will purchase one, spending the money to get one in the best condition they will offer them in, except perhaps for pristine collector grade with would probably be over priced.

I do this even though I already own a couple of GI surplus 1911's in excelent shape just cuz I think it's cool to buy one from the goverment.

That's while I'll buy an M9 if they ever get surplussed.  That, and even if the best ones are in fair at best shape, to own an actual GI one would be a nice part of my collection.

Having had one issued for 13 of my 20 years as a Tanker, let me enlighten some of you.  These are not those vintage 1911a1's collectors dream of and/or horde in the safes.  These were combat issued pistols our armorers use to piece meal together to keep working.  Our arms rooms use to have footlockers full of parts for repairs.  As long as the pistol was operational and the serial numbers matched for your armsroom inventory, that's all that really mattered.  CMP is going to be selling allot of good shooters, but I doubt any collector pieces; the slide may have the pony, but it may be the only item on it that is made by colt.  As far as quality, well, I expect it to run pretty much like the Garands. which means; you'll get what you pay for.  I wouldn't be selling your treasures.  You may end up selling a thoroughbred, and end up with a pinto.  I wager you would spend less money and have a better pistol buying one of Cimarron's 1911's.  What would I know though, having been the PSG in charge of a couple armsrooms in my time and knowing the grim reality of how they run.  If the hipe is worth spending the extra money,,,,,,,, cause there certainly isn't a shortage of 1911's on the market.

i expect there will be a limit on how many you can buy.  I believe they did that with the last run of garands.

Also, the CMP has an armory too.  When they get the guns I think they go over them to put them in different categories, and fix them as needed.  I'd be surprised if they don't take apart a bunch of those mixmasters and make correct guns.  With the Garands they had a grade called CMP special where they did some work on them in-house.
