Quit Dipping

Just curious if there were any other cowboys that have quit, tried or are trying to quit using smokeless tobacco. I quit about 18 months ago and it is one of the best things I have done. I joined an online forum that helps out a bunch QSSN and thought I'd post a link in case anyone might wanna get off the stuff.

Dipped and smoked seemingly forever. Quit smoking in 1987 as my Daddy became ravaged by emphysema but dipped like a madman. Many folks don't realize it but its 10x harder to quit dipping than smoking but I did, hopefully, for the final time this last March 21, 2012.

Okie mentioned cancer as shock treatment to quit snuff but it also has a serious effect long term effect on your overall circulatory system and heart condition. As an analogy, most know that exposure to .22 pistol fire or worse is cumulative and will ultimately result in severe hearing loss if not deafness. Similarly, snuff, with its ultra high nicotine levels, might not appear to affect your health and stamina when you're ten foot tall and bullet proof but just wait...it'll hit you hard sooner or later.

Was taking Chantix month ago caused serious tremors had to go back to dipping to get body back on track. Something about the cure worse than disease. January 1st will be 5 years without cigarettes set em down after 3 years of pack to pack and 1/2 a day not much problem but did it. Also stopped drinking alcohol and soft drinks as well. My inspiration was to have gastric bypass surgery for weight loss. I maxed out at 315 lbs now I am steady about 201. The snuff has been close friend for around 35 years, I am 45soon I think I will try over counter patches so if i can't get enough I can lick the patches:) seriously the hardest tool for me to work with rest somewhere between my ears so i went to proctalogist see if it can be located. No luck so far. Dr. Saw bones ain't learned even though I am motivated that ain't enough to get past our pure desire to consume such a deadly substance.

PS I will quit as soon as my head is out of my a$$

December 17 will mark my two years of being dip free. I was 12-14 hour a day dipper. Loved it. Did it everywhere. Had a dip in while watching my son being born. Sounds terrible but was true. My motivation to quit was the fact that I wanted to be around for my son a lot more than I wanted to dip. Tried some fake stuff that got me over the first two week hump and have not needed a fill in since then. I do have a cigar at a match on occasion and keep a pack of Top roll your own tobbaco in my gun cart and will occasionaly make one up for myself which comes out to 1-2 smokes a month. Hardest part was shooting a stage without a dip in. Won Winter Range in 2010 with a dip in the whole time I shot. I miss it everyday several times a day and wonder if that will go away. You are the only one that can decide to quit and you have to have a motivator.

Chewing gum! Toothpicks! Matchsticks! I don't dare get anything like some roll your own...been down that road once before. Just roll one turns into roll one several times a day and bam...hooked again. I won't even hardly smoke a cigar now.

Sam , yup I would agree with that. Smoking never got a grip on me and does not send me into relapse. Fortunate I guess.

I had a big chaw of Brown's Mule plug 'baccy in 1969 at work, as a 21 year old. Fellow worker offered it. Tasted good. Then, about a half hour in, I started to turn pale and puke my guts. Never put tobacco directly in my maw again-- cured as soon as I started.

Mule, Days Work, Cannonball, and the like require really strong constitutions IMHO!:blink:

Don't denigrate Chantix. It is a very good medicine. I stopped a lot of tobacco users with this medicine. Unfortunately, 15-20% of people are not tolerant of the medicine due to insomnia, nausea, headaches, and bizarre dreams.

I quit for about a month.......thought I had it whooped!......I guess not.

I've dipped Copenhagen at about a can a day for about 15 years now. I want to quit.....I need to quit......Just ain't found the key yet. First I tried the nicotine gum. It was working great for that month. Once I started again, it seems it don't work anymore. I'm thinking of trying the patches next.........As someone else said, I just gotta get my head outta my a$$ first!

I wish all here the best of luck with it. Hope I can beat it soon!

Quitting dipping is the single hardest thing I have done. I dipped Kodiak or Cherry Skoal from about 15 to 30 years old and quit when my son was born. About a year later I lost my job; for some stupid reason I started dipping again. I continued dipping 1 to 1 1/2 cans of Kodiak a day until last year. This last trims I quit I found QSSN and it really helped. Id encouraage y'all to give it a try. It is true that you still have to make up your mind and do it because you want to. I started dropping $3 in a can every day the last time I quit and I had around $1500 to buy guns with recently :) I'm sure prices have gone up and I should adjust that.....

one thing that helped me get past the mental stuff was dipping cotton balls soaked with listerine.

Okie, I bees one of the 15-20% then. You didn't mention severe depression but it went right along with the insomnia and bizarre dreams. That was a helluva ride. I wished my Doc had warned me of the extreme reactions that might occur and to quit taking it immediately. He didn't. Damn dreams were really weird and disturbing too.

BTW, seems that in one of them you mailed everyone a bottle of Red Breast. :D

Hi Tyrel,

Best of luck to you. It is a good thing to share what worked for you.

The things you folks related here remind me of so many people and my own struggle with cigarettes. I don't think the medium is the issue as it's an addiction to nicotine in all of them.

At least with dipping, you aren't affecting others' health. My dad died from smoking cigars and my mom died from second hand smoke.

I've related before how hard it was for me to quit smoking. Despite the fact it killed my dad, it was several more years before I finally was successful.

The best advise I can give is try everything and keep trying until you are successful. Don't give up after a failure. Just keep trying.

Regards,

Allie Mo

PS One person's second hand smoke at yesterday's match was hard to avoid.:( Another person stepped away from the group to smoke. :)

My FIL had quit smoking years before he died. He started with the tooth picks. We had to take them away from him when we found out he started chewing on them so much, he was basicly eating them.

Do you know why cowboys don't get circumcised? So they'll have someplace to put their pinch when they're brushing their teeth!!

The guy that told me that joke over 20 years ago had lost most of his lower jaw and and neck and throat to cancer a few years later. He never smoked or chewed or dipped but he did have a cigar stuck in is mouth, unlit every waking moment. IMHO all tobacco products are bad news and hope each and every one of you can kick the habit. You owe it to your kids and grandkids. Best of luck.
