Drive By "Friending" - Anyone Else

Yesterday, out of the blue, I got an email telling me that "so and so" had designated me a friend on the SASS Forums. The name wasn't someone I had had any particular conversation with, so, after looking over this pard's profile, I chose to sit it out and see what happened.

Sure enough, this morning the pard sent me a PM indicating that he had received, out of the blue, an email announcing that I had befriended him. He, too was confused.

As I told the good pard, I didn't know what was happening, and had understood the action to be initiated by him, which he said wasn't the case. Now I don't use facebook or other social networking sites - see no real reason to. Is this something anyone else has experienced here on the SASS Forums (shouldn't that be "Fora?") and is it new to the new "skins" of the Forum?

:huh::blink:

I got a comment left on my profile that just said "Hello" from someone I don't know. I haven't ever understood the whole "Friend" thing on this forum, so haven't used it at all.

Grizz

I think it's going to crash and burn,it was fun to use just for family but now it's just more crud being forced on you you set you settings then they come in and change it,you have no control, get used to it,it's the big experiment like prison for socialist society, works there they wanna see if it works out here.Just click the F icon at the bottom :P

Never did understand Facebook. Tried it a few years back and started gettin' weird messages from women wantin' to be my "friend", but I didn't know any of 'em. Got a strong suspicion as to what was really goin' on and finally quit when I got a request from a rather, shall we say, differently oriented fella, who also wanted to be my "friend'!!:blink:

I was on Facebook just long enough to realize I didn't want to be on Facebook.

This from Wikipedia: More people visited Facebook than Google for the week ending March 13, 2010.[44] Facebook also became the top social network across eight individual markets in Asia—the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Vietnam, while other brands commanded the top positions in certain markets, including Google-owned Orkut in India, Mixi.jp in Japan, CyWorld in South Korea, and Yahoo!’s Wretch.cc in Taiwan.

It was launched in 2004 but not available to the general public until 2006. Now over 500 million users worldwide. You couldn't give away that many free drugs if you wanted to. The need for connection is greater than the need for food, clothing and shelter. Besides, these days if you want to know what your kids are up to then you better be on Facebook!

Horse puckies.....if you want to know what your kids are "up to", you better be involved in their lives in some more meaningful way than Facebook.

Big time fad, and a sad commentary on how socially disconnected so many folks are.

I love technology, but only when it makes my life simpler, not when it invades my privacy. If I want to contact folks I went to high school with (and haven't kept in touch with for 40 years), I'll go to a reunion...well, probably not.

As for the OP - I suspect lots of folks are trying out the new buttons....

Some people feel a need to be connected. 100 years ago it was chatting over the back fence or at the ladies' sewing circles and such but it was not an around the clock thing.

50 years ago it was people who were "always on the phone."

In the last 10-20 years it was things like cell phones, email and Internet Messengers.

Now the connection addiction has moved to networks like Facebook.

A natural (well unnatural really) progression would be a device that wires to a person's brain so he can know what all his friends are thinking all the time. I hope I'm gone by then.

+1. I still get "friend" requests daily. I think it said there are 76 pending.

There are definately some strange things happening with this new set up.

I got info'd on a PM that was between two other people and I was not involved in the conversation. In other words, I had no business getting that PM from the SASS Wire.

Go figure.

Well, I managed to raise three of them through college and into career jobs. Kept one of them from going the way of his buddies... into rehab and a deadend life. He's now sales director for an internet startup that's growing 50% monthly. My last is a mechanical engineering major/ chinese language minor with a 3.7 GPA at Dartmouth.

Big time fad? well... that's what the genius' at Lehman told Zuckerberg when they could have had 40% for about 10m. 40% right now is about 20 billion.... nice call.

Using you as an example. You have the choice to be connected only if you travel 100's of miles and everyone else does once every 40 years OR simple click of the mouse to say "HOWDY".

XXX do you think the SASS wire is? It's a social networking of like minded people. You can friend or not friend, lurk if you want or participate.

You do have a cell phone, right? Obviously a computer, too.... and I bet 10 years ago you said, "HELL.. who needs one?"

Years ago there were those who predicted that the car was a fad, too. BRILLIANT.

Hi Folks,

Quite a few people "friended" me on the old SASS forum. I recognized all of them, either from meeting them or from their posts here." None appeared to be the "drive by" type that you mention.

I have not "friended" anyone for two reasons. First, I don't want to leave anyone out. Second, I spend too much time here and looking at each of my friends posts might keep me here even longer.

Regards,

Allie Mo

Think of the consequences of that.:ph34r:

Last time I looked I had 150 folks I couldn't place who had friended me. I just leave them pending until I remember who they are or their alias shows up in their real name. I am very leery of accepting someone with thousands of friends. I made an exception for Bob Boze Bell.

True story....

One of the guys in the Air Force over here in Germany, went on leave. Something happened in his unit and they needed to contact him.

They tried all of the numbers he left to get in contact with him. They tried them all to no avail. So...somebody said..."He's on Facebook isn't he?"

Sure enough...they looked him up on Facebook and contacted him.

Go figure

I'm the Pard that was "friended" and that's what I thought, too. What was until he said that he got an e-mail saying I had listed him as a friend, too. Yes, I have been checking out the new stuff, but unless they are incorrectly labeled, NO, we didn't accidentally "friend" each other. Marshal Morgun
