Ultra rare left handed Winchester 73!

Recommended Posts

after shooting a BP match last week I gave my 73 a compete tear down & cleaning.
Putting everything back together I could not get the side plates to cooperate.  After several minutes of monkeying with them, having the toggle links fall out, pulling my hair,  a few swear words, I realized my dyslexia had struck and I was trying to put the plates on the wrong sides. What really worried me is if Ida had a bigger hammer I might have succeeded :o

I dont think I’ll ever find the dust cover detent ball :(

Too bad it was dyslexia.  You might have had the ultra-rare one-of-a-kind left handed rifle that belonged to Billy the Kid!  As for the detent ball, there was a recent thread on that. :)

on a similar side trail,  walked into the kitchen and reached out to turn on the light switch--wrong side of the door opening--lived in this house 30+ years and my brain--what there is left of it--decided the switch had moved to the other side

I would argue that that the 66, 73, 76, 86, 92, and 94 Winchesters, the Marin 1881 and 1888, and the Colt Lightning are all left handed guns.  You hold them in your left hand and stuff rounds in with the right.  Then, if you are left handed, you just shoulder and shoot.   If you are right handed, you need to shift it.   They are clearly therefore designed with southpaws in mind.

Just like the side eject Marlins are all messed up.    They eject to the right, making them right handed guns, but like Winchesters and other top eject guns, they load with a nod to left handed ones.    Marlin shoulda put the gate on the left when they went to side eject.

Kinda like how SAA is a mostly left handed gun.   Or the 1911, except for the safety...

That argument has usually been used when one is trying to convince oneself of a position, the rest of us already know the truth.

I spent about three hours looking in the closet in some parts containers for a new short shank Marbles rear sight I wanted to put on a rifle I was working on.  Could not find it.  A couple of days later while looking for something else I found it in one of the boxes I had previously looked in.  It is approximately 10 feet between the closet and the counter top where I was working on the rifle.  I lost it again.

Have you ever noticed that when loading RNFP ammo in a 92 they tend to get stuck and don't always load smoothly?

If you look at the alignment between the loading gate and the magazine tube of a 92 you'll see that the loading gate is positioned slightly above the magazine tube.

Now instead of holding your 92 with your left hand and loading with your right; hold the rifle in your right hand by the wrist with your fingers in the lever loop and cant the receiver about 45 degrees to the left. Now use your left hand to insert rounds in a sort of over the top fashion. The rounds go right in with no issues.
