How much would you wager?

You are playing Jeopardy. Final Jeopardy. You have $3,500. The guy in the lead has 25,000. There is no way you were going to win unless he really really screws the pooch.

How much of your 3500 would you bet? Bet it all - either go home with seven grand or just the parting gifts? Bet little or nothing so, since you know you're not going to win, you get to keep that $3,500?

Or some other amount?

You get $1,000.00 for 3rd place and $2,000.00 for 2nd place. The only big money is first place. If there was a chance I’d come in 2nd instead of 3rd I’d bet it all to try and get the other $1k.

I didn't know that. Thought all you got was what you had won. And if you had zip all you got was the consolation prizes - The parting gifts.

I've seen people like - well my example. If he doubled his money he would have $7,000. So the one in the lead could bet $17,090, and if they lost they would have $7,010 so they would still be the winner.

I've seen people bet a dollar, when they were in third place. They weren't going to win anyhow, and if they lost they only lost a buck, so they would still take home money.

I’d bet it all, you’ll still wind up with $1000 or $2000

I came into the game with $0 and if I wager $3500 and lost I’d still be even with &0.

On Jeopardy the second place gets $2000 3rd place gets $1000, so you have nothing to lose if you’re wrong. Bet it all is the only way to go!

If you're third with $3500, then it also depends on what the 2nd place guy has going into Final Jeopardy.

If the two are close, then you have to consider the possibility they'll both go big and lose big, or that one will play safe. How have they been playing it during the game? If 2nd is just ahead of you, then you have to guess what 2nd is going to do.

Also, what has been the trend of success in the last few questions going into Final Jeopardy? If the lead and/or 2nd has been on a hot streak, I'd back off. If either or both has been on a losing streak, then I'd press ahead. The psychology of testing shows that wrong answers decrease the likelihood of a correct answer in a marginally-known subject.

The $3500 isn't 'play money' -- it's dollars that you either put into your pocket, or don't. If you keep the $3500, you walk out $3500 richer than if you don't.

You don’t get to keep the $3500 If you don’t get it all you’re either second or third. Like I said 2nd place is $2000 3rd place is $1000

You're right -- I misread the info.

So -- it's junk money anyway. But as I pointed out, you still have to figure in the other contestant and the trend.

So if you come in 3rd place you wind up with less than half of $1000.00. Well at least they pay for your flight there and a hotel room. :P

The Price is Right contestants really get screwed. They don't win any money (for the most part) and have to pay California taxes on all of those 'fabulous' prizes that are 'valued' at way above what anyone, in their right mind, would normally pay.

Remember a few years back, when Oprah gave everybody in the audience a car? Wow. How generous.

Of course, she got to deduct the cost of all those cars as a business expense.

And everybody that got a car had to pay income tax on it, so most of the audience had to sell the brand new car to get the money to pay the tax. And if it was, for example, a $20,000 sticker price car, they might get 10 grand at it selling it to the car lot. Since it's used. But they still have to pay tax on 20.
