Was watching the latest episode of Billy the Kid and took these screen shots off the TV with my phone. They're loadin' up a wagon to go and shoot Billy and the other Regulators holed up in a house.

And you expected WHAT??  Hollyweird was gonna actually mark their faque munitions boxes correctly??  Pshaw.  Ain't gonna happen.

As much as it pains me to say this I think that term of “.45 Long Colt” is here to stay.

Funny little experience.
I was in my LGS and a guy came into the store asking if .45 Long Colt would work in his .45 Colt Rossi 92. He said didn’t notice the “Long Colt” designation when he bought it. He was assured by the clerks that it was okay and it was just another name for .45 Colt.
It made me think about how often this stupid designation has caused someone issues when buying ammo.

If you buy some European ammunition, it will say on the box that it is 9 mm Browning short. It will not say 380 ACP.

Do you suppose it will work in your gun???????

Same thing.

Or maybe you bought some 380 but you're worried it won't work because your gun says it's 9 mm k.

How about the people that are confused between 45 ACP and 45 Auto?

Or maybe 38 special and 38 Smith & Wesson special?

Wait! You mean that’s not a real old box of ammo?? Well, I’m shocked! :P:lol:

Hmmm. Do they call .410 shells 36 gauge? I don’t think I have seen that, but I don’t look at .410 ammo boxes.

This one actually stumped me many years ago. I think I was16.

While I am aware that technically 410s are 36 gauge, I have never seen a box of 410 marked 36 gauge.

Do they do that in Oz?

I have, however, seen ammunition boxes marked both 45 Colt and 45 Long Colt. If you have ever had your hands on a Glock, you may have noticed that they come chambered in 9 mm automatic, 357 automatic, 40 automatic, and 45 automatic. Not 9 mm Luger, 357 SIG, 40 Smith & Wesson, and 45 ACP. Glock is worse than Colt about not putting anybody else's name on their guns.

   ............ seems to be a European thing ...... 😐

A big issue was the Schofields.  They provided advantages in reloading, particularly for cavalry.  Since the 45 Colt could not be used in the Schofield, and the 45 Schofield could be used in handguns chambered for 45 Colt it was a no brainer in terms of logistics for the military.  A rose by any other name...

Can you use 5.56 NATO in a .223 Rem?  How about .223 Rem in a 5.56 NATO.

What about 7.62x51 NATO vs. .308 Win ?

Actually the .410 as a gauge would be a 67 or 67 1/2 gauge. The gauging has to do with the number lead balls the size of the bore it would take to weigh 1 pound.

Yes

EDIT

Oops, with the provision that the COL isn’t too long where the bullet is pushed into the lands raising chamber pressure.

5.56 in .223 = No.

If you knew why did you ask?

This is kind of  I was talking about. The .223 chamber may have a tighter throat. You can shoot 5.56 in a .223 but you must do some measurements first.

It’s explained here:

https://www.outdoorlife.com/guns/556-vs-223/

Oh yeah, I don’t care for either round. I no longer shoot them. I sold my ARs that shot 5.56/.223.

Ah, the joys of working in a gun store some days.

Guy came into the store one day. Boxing Day, maybe the 27th. Said he had got a pistol for Christmas and he needed some ammunition, but he was not sure what kind he needed.

I asked him if he knew what caliber. He said 45. Well that's only about a half a dozen. Automatic or revolver? Revolver. Okay, we know it's not 45 Gap. Who made it? He's pretty sure it's Smith and Wesson. That didn't narrow it down too much.

Then he says he's got it out in the car. Well bring it on in here Skippy and let's see what it takes. He opens the box and I don't even have to pick it up. Tell him it's 45 automatic.

Are you sure?

Oh yeah. That's a 25-2 45 ACP Target revolver.

And he wants to know how it will work with 45 Auto since they don't have a rim. And I go digging through the box and I find four half-moon clips, and explain how they work.

The smartest thing that man did was bring the gun with him.

It was rhetorical, but within the theme of whacky cartridge naming conventions... or lack thereof.
