It wasn't until recently that our society developed its aversion to men displaying affection for one another. Still common in some cultures. To the question in the OP, I thought it was a Starr, but wasn't quite sure.

Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619
You do a double take the first time you see wholly masculine men in Italy who are old friends, walking down the street hand in hand. And if you look at personal correspondence between friends in the 19th century you may be surprised at the expressions of emotion and affection. Only in our unfortunate time do folks now tend to read a sexual aspect into it, which in fact was completely absent. 2

That's why for years people thought Billy the kid was left-handed - the one absolutely known photo of him is a tin type. I would be more concerned with the fact that they're all wearing rouge than that a couple of them are holding hands.

Pictures were a really big deal in those days. They would be made up to look like the picture of health, thus the rouge for rosy cheeks. The gun was probably a prop provided by the photographer.

Subdeacon Joe
Sitting on knees, arm around another guy, etc. As Red commented, only in our unfortunate times in our society is a man showing affection for another man looked at as only sexual. 1

They’re not wearing rouge. That was added to the image after processing. Color tinting was an optional extra offered by photographers back then to make the B&W image more “lifelike”. Probably Soldiers or Marines. 2 hours ago, Alpo said: I would be more concerned with the fact that they're all wearing rouge than that a couple of them are holding hands. Ah! That settles it. Definitely Marines. Sailors don’t look to get photos taken on liberty. They’re were the booze and the girls are…not wearing rouge and holding hands with their foxhole sweethearts.
