A sling is a large triangular cloth bandana sort of thing that is used to keep a broken arm from flapping around.  Also a fairly good place to carry a pistol at the same time.

I don't know what a "loop sling is" and I've never seen anyone use a sling like that.

 

At one minute into this video is how you use a sling to steady a rifle.  Prone, sitting, kneeling or offhand.

Is he afraid that there shooting iron's gonna run away?  Why is he  putting that there dog leash on it?

He attached the leash to the dog collar. It's a mosin.
