May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'BACK IN MY DAY, WE QUALIFIED WITH IRON SIGHTS IN THE RAIN, STILL DRUNK, AND WITH A LOOP SLING'

Looks  a lot like Dad.  For that matter I look a lot like Dad, too.

The drunk part doesn't fit either of us, though.

What's a "sling"?

A sling is a large triangular cloth bandana sort of thing that is used to keep a broken arm from flapping around.  Also a fairly good place to carry a pistol at the same time.

I liked a hasty sling better.  If you adjusted it right it wouldn't tie your arm up when you were ready to move.  It just fell loose and became a carrying strap until you needed it again.

a Loop Sling is using the rifle's sling to steady the weapon by looping the rear section of the sling around your arm.

I don't know what a "loop sling is" and I've never seen anyone use a sling like that.

At one minute into this video is how you use a sling to steady a rifle.  Prone, sitting, kneeling or offhand.

The Loop Sling is shown in the picture I posted. We used Loop Slings during Marine Corps rifle training. It's used sitting, kneeling, and prone.

Watch Hell Is For Heroes.  In one scene near the end of the movie Nick Adams, playing Homer, a Polish kid who wants to fight the Germans, uses a hasty sling the way I remember it being done.
