What's a "sling"?

A sling is a large triangular cloth bandana sort of thing that is used to keep a broken arm from flapping around.  Also a fairly good place to carry a pistol at the same time.

I liked a hasty sling better.  If you adjusted it right it wouldn't tie your arm up when you were ready to move.  It just fell loose and became a carrying strap until you needed it again.

I don't know what a "loop sling is" and I've never seen anyone use a sling like that.

At one minute into this video is how you use a sling to steady a rifle.  Prone, sitting, kneeling or offhand.

Watch Hell Is For Heroes.  In one scene near the end of the movie Nick Adams, playing Homer, a Polish kid who wants to fight the Germans, uses a hasty sling the way I remember it being done.
