Military Camo Shortage ?????

When I was deployed to Bahrain with VQ-2 we were issued 2 pairs of desert camies. We seldom wore them as our blue cotton blend coveralls were a lot cooler and easier to put on and take off when traveling between the airfield and our condo.

One thing that became apparent right away was that the camies faded 4 to 5 times faster than our coveralls.

The Navy denied the much laughed at Blueberry uniform was camouflage. The claimed the blue/grey pattern was to show less dirt and grease on the work uniforms.
Most people speculated, including me, that the Navy was the only branch that didn’t have a cool looking combat uniform and they wanted to join the party.

It is still, as the above right shows, the Army Combat Uniform. It is only the pattern that has changed, which is noted in my link.

I understand what you say But ask any soldier and they will refer to the new one as OCP not ACU which was officially called the Universal Camo Pattern which was used by no one .

Huh… I served with more than a few who kept calling them ACUs after the UCP was out. I’ll let them know they aren’t “any soldier.” Who knew?

A friend of mine’s daughter came to visit at our job. She was wearing her Navy cammies in a green barf pattern.
First, I was taken aback that the Navy allows sailors to wear “utilities” off base in public.
Second, I thought the uniform? looked like a messy baggy salad.
She said they were very comfortable until I asked how they feel in the sun. She said on the Carrier they wore different shirts for the deck crews. She is an Aviation Boatswains Mate, I think. She works on and operates the plane catapults on the Nimitz.

Lots of things are different for carrier deck crews.

All of the buttons on the trouser pockets are removed so as not to become FOD.

The last I saw, some were even wearing completely different pants with velcro, blue for junior enlisted and khaki for chiefs and officers.  Almost, if not all, wore velcro "riggers" belts so that a belt buckle didn't become FOD.

The shirts are the same turtlenecks used on every ship for flight deck crews, with the color of the shirt designating what the person does.

I would like to point out that the Israeli army downs not wear camo and they seem to perform quite well in simple OD duds. ;)

In referrence to the helter-skelter changing of camo patterns, the joke in the surplus industry was that some congressmen had relatives in the Southeastern States who were in the textile business.....

Now DRMO won't relinquish surplus/damaged uniforms into the used pipeline for fear the 'enemy' might get them and infiltrate our bases......  Instead, they shred and burn them.

I have news for those 'forward thinkers'......
