Hardpan Curmudgeon SASS #8967 Posted February 12, 2023 Posted February 12, 2023 I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of this until this morning... wonder what folk will think. New california law allows non-U.S. citizens to become police officers "Prior to Jan. 1, 2023, you had to be a United States citizen or permanent resident to qualify for the job. Now, that's no longer the case. Anyone who is legally authorized to work in the state of California, under federal law, with the proper green card or visa, is eligible to become a police officer."
John Barleycorn, SASS #76982 Posted February 12, 2023 Posted February 12, 2023 I would take serious umbrage at being detained, cited, or otherwise contacted by a non citizen police officer. I guess I’d have no way of knowing. YMMV.
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted February 12, 2023 Posted February 12, 2023 At least they're saying "legally authorized to work in the state of California". I'm surprised that they're not letting Illegal Aliens be Cops. They're giving them Drivers Licenses and trying to give them the vote.
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 As long as they are here legally and jump through all the same hoops as other police officers (age, training, background, education) I really don't have a problem with it. Resident aliens can already buy guns and get driver's licenses.
Chantry Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 Since they are here legally and have to meet all other existing standards I have no issue with it. It does speak to the recruiting issues that more and more police departments seem to be having in the past 4 or 5 years.
Subdeacon Joe Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 Legal resident with work permit? Why not? Likely have more respect for and knowledge of both the law and the Constitution than our legislators.
Captain Bill Burt Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 I bet the Chinese are already thinking about how they can take advantage of this one. Fortunately I haven't left anything in California so it shouldn't have an impact on me, for now.
DocWard Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 Resident aliens can serve in the U.S. military. I'm not sure this is so different.
Lawdog Dago Dom Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 Looks to me like California has more thorough background checks to buy guns than they do to hire cops?
bgavin Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 How exciting! Now, we can be pulled over get a ticket, be sold a packet of fentanyl then offered a choice of the young girls he is offering in his cruiser.
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted February 13, 2023 Posted February 13, 2023 I think it is a dirty trick to pull on the resident aliens. Lure them into being cops and then defunding them.
