WHY? Gunsmoke question

This is one for Alpo.....

WHY did they always send 'Chester' to fetch somebody?

The Marshal sent Chester to fetch the Doc.

The Doc sent Chester to fetch the Marshal.

Ms. Kitty would send Chester to fetch Matt or the Doc.

WHY did they always send Chester, who could only half gallop and surely

couldn't get up or down all those steps to the Docs office.

I bet ALPO knows.

To get rid of him!!  I thought he was irritating and believe the cast thought so too.    Fetus was the man in my opinion     GW      Oh yah  Mary Ann while we are at it.

Chester was getting paid to clean up, make coffee and go get stuff! That's about all the loser could do! I hope they didn't pay him too much!:P

I've been watching the reruns for quite some time here and still in all my life have never seen a Gunsmoke with Chester. I feel left out! Thanks for reminding me Widder!

What I could never figure out is whether Chester was a deputy (he sure accompanied Matt on enough jobs), and why he didn't wear a gun?  He must have had some firearms training, as IIRC, he got his stiff leg from a wound in the CW.  Trying to recall how the radio version of Chester was played.
