Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I saw a beautiful 97 Win that's been reblued, stock is original and really nice with no nicks etc. It has a 30" barrel the guy's asking 629.00, it's on consignment at a local gun store and the owner said he could probably get the guy to come down a bit. What's a fair price for a 97 in really good shape. Rye, who knows nothing about 97's, Miles
Phantom, SASS #54973 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Takedown reblued and probably refinished wood...but in otherwise real good shape... $400-450
Blackwater 53393 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Phantom owns a gun shop, so he would know the going rate. I'd say he's in the ballpark here as well. I've been offered a lot more for one particular '97, but it is really special nd my wife would make me disappear if I were to sell it. You should make an offer that is comfortable to you. $629.oo is a little steep unless there is something really special about the gun.
Korupt Karl Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I bought a couple of 97's last year that were slicked and ready to go for around the price that Phantom quoted. I thought it was a good deal.... can never have enough.
Cheyenne Culpepper 32827 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 the 97 has no real value except for CAS. and they are plentiful is the part of the woods... figure a base of $100 for an action job,,,, Ide say I agree with Phantom's low #, but wud look it over real well first!! how worn are the knurls on the hammer spur? in half cock will the trigger release the hammer? Bore?? are the edges sharp, as in not buffed real hard for the re-blue.... take down or solid frame???
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Condition, condition and condition. For a gun to be used in Cowboy or Wild Bunch shooting, external glitter (reblue and refinish) says little. The proof is on the inside - how well does the gun function (extract, eject, feed, etc.) Once someone reblues a gun, the external condition tells you NOTHING about what is on the inside. (An unrefinished gun can be said to have "honest wear" for a pretty good reason - just looking at the external condition gives you a hint about the true internal condition.) $400 is about tops for a gun that you don't know how to evaluate for function and the seller is not willing to let you take it for an evaluation by a top COWBOY gunsmith. Many normal smiths will slowly run two shells through, see that the firing pin is not broke and the mag and carrier feed ok, and pronounce it "golden". A cowboy smith will see if he can get it to run 6 shells in 4 seconds smoothly. Even if the gun is great, you probably are still looking at another $200 action job and a trim of barrel and rebead before you go to matches. If the internals are ragged, add another $200 for repairs. That adds up fast. Good luck, GJ
Cheyenne Culpepper 32827 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 it will sit a a while at anything near that price,,,,, how many CAS shooters are in your neck of the woods? you can buy a real real nice mdl 12 for that price.... let it sit and offer no more than $300, tho Ide start at $250 in our market here! give him the idea it isn't solid gold....
Phantom, SASS #54973 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Believe it or not, folks other then Cowboy shooters by these wonderful shotguns Regardless of whether it's an "E" model...regardless of whether it's a 3-Screw... If it's pretty and it works...it'll get close to $400 min. Yes...there is a demand outside of CAS...I know it's hard to believe...but it's twue. Phantom
Blackwater 53393 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 DANG! Phantom!! I'm agreeing with you twice in one day!! Schoolmarm has the aforementioned '97. I have a very nice semi-auto with all of the tactical bells and whistles, and when I leave to go out of town, she wants that '97 and a box of shells beside the bed! She wanted it before she even considered CAS. "It's simple to operate. You can load through the ejection port. If you have to re-cock it the hammer is out in the open!" are her reasons.

Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Rye, ifn that feller can't come down in price, it might not be a favorable time for you to get involved in the 97..... Of the few clones I have and a couple Winchester branded 97's, I have yet to pay more than $350, even for those new or Like New. And a couple of them had already been 'tweaked' by competent gunsmiths. ..........Widder
Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 Hey Phantom, thanks for your expertise. It seemed a little high to me but I haven't bought a 97 in a coon's age! Thanks for everyone who weighed in, much obliged….Rye
VICIOUS, SASS#8014 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 HOWDY; Up north of the great lakes, non cowboy E s in near perfect shape folks are asking 800 to 1000 dollars. Originals in nice shape 450 to 650 are asked. Bought a 1954 at auction in nice shape for 450 out the door and was pleased with the price.
Mink Shoals Bandit, #49388 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I would like to find a dozen of those "$250." dollar shooters.....
Frederick Jackson Turner Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 The market is driven by scarcity; they don't make them, anymore. Out here, a good solid frame Winchester is worth the $629.00, before the action and barrel cut. Expect to spend $450.00-$500.00 on anything that runs. Cheers, Californian FJT
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 RYE, find yeself a good match down South during the winter months. Carry that money with ya and buy yeself a nice 97 for about $400. Maybe even a REAL NICE specimen for no more than $500. The money you would save over them 'northern' prices will probably pay for your gas, the match and maybe even a small jar of lemonade. Just a thought! ..........Widder

Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Yankee dollars will work everytime. p.s. - just so you know, getting the lemonade might be alittle easier than getting the '97... :) ..........Widder
