A special thanks to my buddies on the Avanti Forum for passing this along.

From what I have seen around here, there should be a couple of people get all 19 right.

QUIZ - KNOW YOUR V-8 ENGINES

Have Fun !

Thanks Professor.

The good news - 15 of 19.

Bad news - missed one of a car I own - but I have never seen one with the stock engine.

How did you do?

Doc???

I also did poorly and missed my 400 Olds, also because I never saw it when it was stock.

14 of 19. I'm not going to complain about that.

Wow. Any I got right was pure luck. But back in my mechanic days I rarely worked on U.S. made cars unless it was pre-WWII. Might have recognized the flathead V-8 in my '40 Ford, but that wasn't one of the choices in any of the pictures.

Only late model engine, if you could call early 60's late model, I workd on was in a Genie-Ford. And that was so modified for racing it had virtually nothing stock-looking.

None of those engines liiked anything like those found in a Velie, Stutz or Pierce-Arrow.

You got 17 right out of 19, should have known better but the Studebaker and the 427 SOHC threw me, but have never seen em. I'm happy with that, I've worked on all or seen the others.............

Got 14 right, I don't do Fords so some of them threw me. Neat game...

GENTLEMEN -

Give yourselves a collective pat on the back. Like I said, I got this from the Avanti forum, posted it here, and on a Ford Performance forum, plus sent a few copies to various friends.

NOBOBY has gotten all 19 right - 17 out of 19 has been the best score.

And, myself, like others, have missed cars that we own [but not Studebakers]- really embarrassing.

Even sent it to a good friend who has a classic car show on Speedtv - 17 of 19 - and missed both Mercurys, and he is supposed to be a Mercury expert.

On the whole, this group has done way better than the members of the car sub culture.

Drinks are on the Studebaker owners.

Part II will be forthcoming.

Never saw a SOHC up close. The other two I have no excuses. :FlagAm:

I pumped gas at a real service station back in 60's....

quite a few of these were under the hood....

11 outta 19.

I just turned 40, so I wasn't even alive when a bunch of them monsters were produced.

AND, compared to some folks I used to run with during high school and college, I ain't even a serious gearhead. :FlagAm:

Knowin' the factory paint colors of the Big 3 helped the 'process of elimination', though.

I worked service stations and raced in my misspent youth. That's why I did not graduate from college; fast cars, women & alkyhol. Sorry boys but I got all 19 out of 19. Couple of them I really had to think about. Color of engine paint, air cleaners, carbs or injection(283 & 327 only) & valve covers.

Excellent job Shenny - but I have to ask - how many Boss 429's or 427 SOHC's came thru rural Virginia?

CONGRATULATIONS

Watch for Part II - it is nowhere near as easy.

I got them all. I grew up in a garage because my Dad was a mechanic. It really brought back some memories.

Never saw a 427 SOHC except at the track. Helped pull a Boss 429 out of a Mustang that was wrapped around a tree. I think I still have the PS oil cooler somewhere, I'm a pack rat.

The 17 engine test was harder. I did not know the custom Pontiac. Too many do-dads.

Shenny -

I am fixing to post the 2nd test - I got 14 out of 17 - and missed the same engine on both tests.

Two people on the Avanti/Studebaker forum finally got all 19 right, but so far, nobody has from the Ford or Mopar forums.

Be forewarned - I have sent the americantorque people pics of a 57 Rambler Rebel Fuel Injection engine, and a 421 Super Duty Pontiac with dealer installed Mickey Thompson Hemi heads, to use on the next version of this engine id quiz.

ya know, the mind and eyes are funny things....as I was scanning the forum looking at the last person to post on each thread, I could have sworn the last to post on this thread was "Brothel King" :) Those chili cheese dogs with onions I made for dinner must be effecting me somehow.

18 of 19. not too bad, missed the Buick, Olds big block one. stupid mistake. My Grandfather was a big Studebaker guy, so I knew those right away. I have worked on most of those engines except the 427 sohc one, but have seen them before. I've been a gearhead since the 60's. I've got 8 cars and trucks and 1 motorcycle now. 6 small block Chevy engines in my garage now, and 1 Ford 289.
