  3. I have a class 3 (SOT) license and I can tell you the wait is the better part of a year. I would start the paper work and worse case get the suppressor in a year. It would suck to wait and the bill never get passed, then have to wait another year. Slick

  4. I looked it up. The NFA '34 actually does call them "Silencers." What is all this "Suppressor" terminology? That said, their is one SASS legal pistol that can use a silencer. The Nagant. I got 2 of 'em....

  5. So this morning I stopped into the local gas station for a cup of coffee and I pull up and their is this woman smoking a cigarette while pumping gas. I thought, "wow this woman is stupid," oh well I thought, let natural selection do it's job and I walked in. As I was getting my coffee I noticed two of our local finest men in blue walking out and I gave them a "howdy do gents", and told them they might want to keep an eye on the woman. I come out with my coffee and sure enough this woman is yelling and screaming and her arm is on fire! The police officers took a fire extinguisher out of their trunk and properly extinguished the woman. From there it got confusing, they slapped the cuffs on her and put her in the back of their cruiser. I asked them, "Are you arresting her because she is stupid?" they responded with "No she was waving her FIREARM around like a crazy person!" I heard this joke at the office today, and had to share. This is not a true story and is meant tickle your funny bone on a Friday. Have a great Weekend!

  6. Fast, I was a 60s-70s kid. Jean came in different lengths but the choices were KMart, Toughskins (Sears brand) and the Levis/Lee/Wranglers for the richer kids. I wore Toughskins and knew that they would get handed down to younger brothers. There was no loafing for us. School, work (yard or farm) and baseball filled our days. Calling my parents would have likely meant being someplace I should not have been. We just figured it out and stayed out of trouble, mostly.

  8. I took a couple of nice big does with my 1866 in .45 Colt, during one season. Took a nice buck with my 1885 in .45-70 and I use my "Wyatt Earp" open hammer 12 ga. when I hunt partridge, rabbits and grouse. My Browning BSS now feels lonely and neglected in the safe. No handgun hunting here in Canada for a long time.

  10. Oh dear heavens ... He was THAT old? Mary Tyler Moore, eighty? ... What was it the wise man said when he looked into the mirror? "Though the world ages around me, I myself remain the same." Kind of like "Every year doctors and state troopers get younger."

  11. Much good advice here, I won't add to the powder selections because fine fellows who are younger, smarter and better lookin' than me have already given sound advice. Let me instead expand on using Unique. I thought "It's a big case and a small amount of powder, I'll make sure it's against the flash hole" -- so I stuffed wadded up squares of toilet paper on top of the powder charge. Three shots and it looked like I was shooting chickens instead of a Gould's Express. Cleaned up my mess, quit using toilet tissue, went to a card wad atop the powder and corn meal to take up the rest of the volume. Probably unnecessary but a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and I know just enough to get in trouble.

  12. I joined SASS before I knew what I was getting. I joined because all of the club's around were SASS affiliated. I joined because I thought it was expected of me. Now that I know more about the organization the question is will I continue to renew my membership? Absolutely! Why? Because I am impressed with the aspect towards safety and the consistency of the rules. I don't need anything more than that. Now, what would I change? Not one darn thing! I'm tired of change! No, really, I'm too new at this game to have an opinion on that.

  14. Call your vendor and ask them to make it right. If they don't them tell them you will let everyone you know about their poor quality. There are way too many good bullet casters out there to waste your time one that produces a poor quality product. Powder / Hi-Tech coating IS NOT the problem. The problem is poor casting quality.

  15. My neighbor has that system, with the surpressor threaded on to the muzzle brake, that is threaded on to the barrel. Not sure that it reduces recoil anymore than just a surpressor threaded directly to the barrel in felt recoil. We share the same smith in Idaho, and he's truly a machinist. He properly installed it for him. Its a 338 lapua improved. Couple things I don't like about the surpressor are the shift in point of impact, and the length of it. If you buy a 30 inch Hart for the velocity, then have to spin another 8 inches on it, it's too darn long. You either have to load tune, and zero the gun with it off or on, because the poa is different even though it will shoot tight either way. Now some gun makers are building their rifles with a short threaded barrel, with a protective thread collar on it figuring the buyer will put a surpressor on it. This ruins the velocity of the cartridge cutting 6 inches off of it. I spose if I were shooting high volumes of rounds in one spot on a bench, I'd buy one. Lunger

  17. Suppressors will cause lots of issues with shot timers for sure. I've shot speed steel with a non suppressed 10/22 and had the timer not pick up shots. BUT I STILL WANT A SUPPRESSOR!!!!!

  19. Not sure if this is pertinent but when I was loading 38-55 I tried many powders but the 5744 gave me the best results all around. My friend that loaded 45-70 suggested it.

  21. In an effort to get back to the friendly spirit of the original post, let me throw out some personal perspective from a long-time member (family of 4).......... To me personally, SASS simply represents a harkening back to childhood and westerns, let's me use guns in competition that I find a helluva lot more interesting than "modern" ones, has unquestionably the finest bunch of folks I've ever been around in any shooting discipline I've tried - and I've dabbled in many, and allows those same fine folks to provide a great influence on my teenage daughters at events we attend. Old fashioned values are the norm That being said, what keeps me paying dues for all four of us every year when we haven't shot a sanctioned match in almost two years, and even in years we have shot it's only 1 or 2 given our remote location? Simple, it's to support an organization that allows and fosters all of the above. Do I agree with everything that comes along? Not by a long shot, but they're still the hub of organized CAS shooting and I'll do what I can to support them even if I don't get that cool old monthly SASS newspaper. Now if I had to suggest a focus area to address (along with more active marketing), it would be to change the structure of how significant competitions are ran. Yes, it's an expensive sport - little can be done about that and I've never found a shortage of folks willing to lend guns. Far more problematic & prohibitive (from a middle aged/working family man) is the fact major matches have never been set up as family friendly for scheduling. I fully realize the scheduling challenges there are for a truly large event, but to put it simply holding much of an event on weekdays will ALWAYS limit your participation from families with kids in sports, academic calendar realities, etc unless they live nearby. For those of us that live a day's drive from any major event, that equates to nearly a full week off from work and school which is just damn tough to do. The competitive side of this sport is set up for retirees or empty nesters with some disposable income, which of course is exactly who the majority of competitors are at big events. That's an unfortunate reality to our sport, but I'll still continue our memberships indefinitely and shoot when we can......SASS has given me more enjoyment and fine friendships than I could ever repay and if my dues help someone like me jump into SASS/CAS a few years from now just because it's still around, that is icing on the cake. And here me and my family are, managing to promote our sport for a mining-related infomercial I was tapped for a couple years ago! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoGuvR82FX4#action=share Kid Colter (and family) Spearfish, SD now, but last 15 years in far north NV

  22. Lunger is one of the good guys.He and Tillie re excellent shots and, in my experience, are the rare kind of people it would be nice to have more of as members. However, the word rare fits and it is too much to expect that many members would fit his category. It would be wonderful if we could find a plan to attract more members. Personally.I would like to start with an affordable Life Member payment plan. I would start with keeping the members we already have!! :-) By the way, I do not always agree with Lunger!!!
