squib and sons attempt to fix

my son was shooting my 1873 rifle as he loves cowboy guns.  He was paying attention and noticed a light poof sound when he fired and realized nothing came out.  A hollow point round was stuck 2 inches from the end of the barrel.  I told him to take it inside near where i keep my tools.  He decided to try his hand to fix it.  he forced the round back to the receiver but couldn't get it out so he took off the side plate.  He took the parts out when I caught him.  the lever was locked open .  i asked him if taking the plate off helped him access the bullet to which he admitted it didn't.  I don't mind he tried as he has to learn but I wish he had waited for me so I could put it back together .  I usually keep it together when I take the plate off to clean.  

 

these were factory rounds.  surprised it happened.

I came home to piles of Vaquero and 73 parts once. Kaya took apart our dirty guns the day after a match and deep cleaned them. I walked in and she looked kind of embarrassed. Couldn't put them together again. I was just glad each pile was just one gun. They were spotless. 

I think she was 12 or 13.

Dads, they gave it a try. I am sure they gave it a good try. It’s how they learn. They just wanted you to be happy with them and proud of them.

Good for both of you. I didn’t have multiple piles, but that is how I have learned how things work since I figured out there was stuff inside other stuff…. Bicycles, clocks, guns, engines, computers, printers and electric motors you name it, all ended up dismantled to see how thy worked. Best of all, got everything back together and they (generally) worked, though sometimes took a couple tries. IMHO the best way to learn.

A pard of mine had a terrible string of shoots where he had all kinds of squibs. We started calling him “Squibby Cole” ( His alias was Cole Allen)

Always make sure the bolt is closed when driving out a squib.  I broke the ejector on a Marlin when the squib rod hit the nose of the ejector spring.

 

With the bolt closed, the ejector and extractors are pretty well protected.

 

This applies to toggle link rifles as well as Marlins and 92s

Well, at least they didn't go on a space-saving mission in your reloading room and consolidate all your different gunpowders into one container. 😐

since i still can't get the bullet out of the chamber nor remember how to put the internals back in I guess a gun smith is in order.  Yet one more item I had for years that suddenly is broken once a son got a hold of it.  A bad round can happen to anyone though

thats a tad scary , i dont remember that being anything but a PITA but .........good for her 

 

my daughter minored in meteorology and majored in statistics , that confused me as well ,...........but she has done quite well for herself ,
