Muley Gil SASS # 57795
Question for those who load black powder cartridges: Does anyone enlarge the primer flash hole when using real black powder? I never have, but there is a poster on the Smith & Wesson forum that is loading for an early S&W revolving rifle in .320 caliber & he has measured a number of original cases. He sez the flash holes are larger.
Sedalia Dave
DON’T DO IT! First it’s not necessary and second if those cases are ever loaded with smokeless it could cause the primers to back out or possibly fail. 4
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Nope. Only if you were loading for that S&W revolving rifle, and probably I would not do it even then. BP is pretty easy to ignite, the subs also. Enlarged flash holes are useful mainly for blanks! good luck, GJ
I. M. Crossdraw, SASS# 8321
Nope. No need to. Leave that hole alone, it'll get you in trouble.☺️
watab kid
NO , there is no need , why mess about with something that is working fine ? if you have an issue bring it up here , im sure there will be ample answers and helpful suggestions ,
Griff
What everyone else has said. Not necessary. The only thing you might do is "uniform" the flash holes... and I only do that on cases for precision rifle or long range shooting.

Snakebite
Years ago I enlarged he flash hole in a few 45-70 cases. I did it because I was using up a bunch of Pyrodex pellets that I got for free and was convinced that they needed more ignition.... so I drilled out the flash holes in a few cases, shot up those damned pellets and then used the cases in some of my Yard Art Metal Fowers. Best advice is this: DON'T DO IT! Snakebite

John Barleycorn, SASS #76982
I use magnum primers with APP & BP. Probably not necessary but I tell myself I’m getting a more complete burn of the powder.
