Old Ironsides: Warrior and Survivor

Old Ironsides

BY OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES SR.

Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!

   Long has it waved on high,

And many an eye has danced to see

   That banner in the sky;

Beneath it rung the battle shout,

   And burst the cannon’s roar;—

The meteor of the ocean air

   Shall sweep the clouds no more!

Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood

   Where knelt the vanquished foe,

When winds were hurrying o’er the flood

   And waves were white below,

No more shall feel the victor’s tread,

   Or know the conquered knee;—

The harpies of the shore shall pluck

   The eagle of the sea!

O, better that her shattered hulk

   Should sink beneath the wave;

Her thunders shook the mighty deep,

   And there should be her grave;

Nail to the mast her holy flag,

   Set every thread-bare sail,

And give her to the god of storms,—

   The lightning and the gale!

If you ever get a chance to visit the USS Constitution you should definitely do it.
I have been there twice. The last time I won 2 spots on a “turnaround cruise” in Boston harbor in July 4, 2019. What a fantastic way to spend Independence Day. I took my son-in-law with me.

Boston is also a great city to visit. Lots of historical sights and lots of friendly people and done really good food.

Here are a couple of photos from Sept. 2018 and July 2019.

But thankfully her ensign flies

Still proudly in the breeze

That stalwart ship of iron-strong oak

Who ruled the storm tossed seas

Her guns are silent, not her soul

She stands as freedom’s crown

So all may view her yet today

as she rests in Boston town

Trivia information:  The USS Constitution is the only US warship still in commission that has sunk an enemy ship.

She could probably do it again too. Imagine her sailing right up to a Russian frigate. As the Ruskies stand there laughing at her, down drops her gun ports to reveal Harpoon launchers. :D

In today's low I.Q. woke climate, I do hope she is being guarded well. Too many of our historical statues, and memorials, are being defaced, for some stupid reason/excuse, by ignorant and yep, even stupid people.

We need to preserve our history, warts and all, so we can, perhaps, avoid past wrongs and mistakes, and to also repeat the great things we have done.

No human being is perfect, so we should not expect our history to be perfect either.

But we have to accept the fact that imperfect human beings can write, and can do, great things.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident

That all men are created equal

That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights

That among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

True words, and they should be right under Scripture in importance, yet they were written by imperfect men, and the words were supported by humans that may have had slaves. Yet, regardless, the words ring absolutely true, and they set a goal for us to strive for.

God uses imperfect humans to carry out His perfect Will.

The woke/crt/gender change crowd can't accept these facts, for the same reason that a bank robber can't find a cop.

As a Navy veteran, I am so proud of our country, that saved this great symbol, and ship, that fought for freedom for all of us.

Thanks for the post, showing this valuable piece of American history. :FlagAm:

For several years, my law office was at Constitution Plaza, one wharf over from Old Ironsides.  I spent many a dreamy afternoon, staring idly out of my window, reliving historical naval engagements.   Hard to think of a better place for an office.

During a two week vacation back in 2019 I spent two days in Boston that included one day at the Charlestown Navy Yard museums and the USS Constutuion.

Here are a few photos from that day inluding the dry dock that was most likely shown in the previous photo.
