Got a catalog yesterday from Stauer (Volume235 /2022).  On page 8 is a 12 inch bowie-type knife, not something I would ever want, but very spectacular.  The 12 inches appears to be overall length and I can't find a blade length anywhere in the ad.  It is a very large knife by most standards.

There is a note at the end of the description: "California residents please call 1-800-***-**** regarding Proposition 65 regulations before purchasing this product."

I don't care enough to call, but would like to know what California is up to now.  I have several 12 inch knives, including a butcher's knife and a bread knife, neither of which I use very often.  O also have a 14" knife I use in the garden, a bolo knife and a machete that I used to carry when I was busting brush, and a WWI Springfield bayonet that is about 17 inches long..... and my Army officer's saber and Marine NCO sword that are reminders of my time serving in these branches.  And my "samurai" swords from my time in Japan?

Oh my God!  I also have a draw knife over my work bench, and how about some large chisels in the workbench drawer?

If I ever go back to California (not very likely) would I be a felon if I had one of these in my trunk?  Are scythes and sickles now "assault weapons"?  Are Masons now dangerous because of their ceremonial swords?  How about all the re-enactors' swords ll over the state?

Is a registration scheme in the future...or already here?

Is the insanity ever going to end?

Prop 65 WARNINGS

I've seen that on micrometers, wrenches, mild steel, tool steel, and pottery.  Some moron tried to get it put on coffee, but a judge ruled that since you would have to drink about 50 quarts of coffee every day for 25 years the likelyhood of it doing harm was so small as to be invisible.
But pretty much everything else sold in CA, or stores that carry such products, have the warning.

There's even t-shirts with it on the front, too.

You will find prop 65 warnings on sales webpages since CA residents purchase items on the internet.

I was speaking with a gunshop out of state, and he said for them to ship to CA, they have to post this warning on their web pages.

I first saw it online on MSC when I was looking at gauge blocks and gauge pins.

We need a warning label on everything Californian...EVERYTHING!!!  Post it on every California product, including TV shows, movies, political announcements, travel literature, telephone numbers food items, wines, clothing, banking establishments, hotels and restaurants, amusement parks, and anything else we can think of.

Then we need to encourage everyone to boycott those products.

An funny aside:

Several years ago, I went with my wife to our Fresno County Fair (pre-covid when they still held one).

She was turned back at the gate because she had a tiny 1-1/4" x 1/4"  very dull, folding letter opener knife on her key ring.  While she took it back to the car, I stayed at the gate waiting and keeping her  place in line.

While I stood there chatting with the two officers, I pointed out that less than 100 feet inside the gate, anyone could walk into the Industrial Arts building and buy, cash- and-carry, a full cuttlery set with an assortment of very big kitchen knives.

They looked at each other and broke into laughter, along with a half dozen people in line who overheard.

I still think Prop 65 came about because there was a big party in Sacramento and all the politicians brought their kids. Someone noticed that all their offspring were a bunch of window lickers so it was decided that something must be done…hence Prop 65.
