Subdeacon Joe 25,995
But it is well stated. From a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan: "So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts. Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling. Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don't make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification. Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 86-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage. Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you. Semper Fi! Can we hear a big AMEN? I hope this keeps being forwarded until it reaches someone at a network who might consider demanding that it be sung correctly! 11

DocWard 5,426
I’ve said many times that Whitney Houston’s rendition at the Super Bowl in 1991 was the best and worst thing that could happen to it. For those Serving and preparing for the ground war of Desert Storm, it was inspiring. Every self centered star since has tried to top it.
Subdeacon Joe 25,995
I'm rather partial to this version. He walks out, no fanfare, no big build up, and sings it.

Knowing that she can't carry a tune she should have refused the job. That said, I prefer her rendering of it over high heat to some of the abominati0ns I have heard from various professional singers. watab kid 1,071
i seldom catch any of these performances in the first place but i have seen/heard the really bad as the news and criticism spread , or the good on youtube when my friends encouraged its value , i think most of these "stars" have no legitimate place in most of these venues - but then im far from impressed with those that think they are "that" special
