When you first see that, that looks really really stupid.

 

But for that pull off lid to work there has to be, for lack of a better term, a flange around the top of the can that that lid sets on.

 

If you are trying to pour the contents of the can out, they get hung up behind that flange. Then you go in there with the spoon and you try to scrape them out.

 

It's easier to get them out if you open the can with a can opener, which does away with the flange, giving you a knifeNICE smooth exit.
