Brass shot shell loading question

The way I use to load them the best I can remember is as follows:

1) deprive/size shell

2) prime

3) add bp

4) insert plastic wad- I prefer to use Remington sts/nitro wads exact number is a blank

5) add shot

6) add over shot card - previously used 12ga size

7) glue card around edges with hot glue

8) roll edge of shell

I used the 12 ga. Over shot cards because I didn't know better when I ordered them. If I'm correct I should have used 11ga over shot wads IIRC. Is that correct use 11ga overshot cards for 12 ga brass shells?

Hey Blackey:

According to the Circle Fly Sizing Guide:

10 gauge overshot wad for MagTech hulls:

When I use 12 gauge brass shells I load like this

1) deprive/size shell

2) prime

3) add bp

4) add over powder wad

5) add fiber wad

6) add shot

7) add over shot card - previously used 11ga size

8) glue card around edges with Elmer glue

Some times use two over shot cards

I'm just starting this journey, but this is what I have found that works for me (so far).

  1. De-prime/resize brass
  2. Prime with Magnum Large Pistol Primer
  3. Drop Powder
  4. Insert 11 gauge Nitro wad
  5. Insert 11 gauge Fiber wad
  6. Insert 11 gauge Nitro wad
  7. Drop shot 1 1/8 oz
  8. Add Glitter to top
  9. Add overshot card
  10. Apply roll crimp
  11. Glue with Elmer's

My routine:

De-Prime/Prime (do not resize)

Dump Powder

Nitro Over Powder Wad (11 Ga)

10Ga Plastic Wad, shot cup cut for 1oz Pay Load

2 10Ga Over Shot Cards > no Glue

Don't roll the case mouth

I have a very light Antique J P Sauer Hammer Double for which I delete the Over Powder Wad and just load the 10 Plastic wad for a nice lighter load.

I was using the over powder nitro cards then fiber wads, shot and overshot card until I set up some 30" x 30" cardboard targets at 7 yards to show me my shot pattern.

Had some really sparse holes in the center of the pattern so I switched to plastic wads and now have nice solid patterns using same equipment other than the fiber wads. In another thread, several others were experiencing the same thing.

With the fairly small targets we use, I can't afford a big ole hole in the middle........... just something to test for yourself if interested.

Thanks and thanks for the link I've got several of the brass shells now since I had a few left over from before and been buying the used ones here at a good price.

Sizing is usually not needed I find. I prime (mine take 209s), then appropriate amount of powder (I use Unique), a 11g nitro, winchester 12g plastic wad, shot, then 10ga overshot card. You have to make sure you get that nitro card tight though. A bit of looseness and you get ffftttttt rather then boom.

Pretty close to how I load them:

1) Deprime (No sizing, they only get fired in one SxS so sizing isn't an issue for me.)

2) Prime

3) Add 2f bp

4) 11ga Over powder card

5) 11ga Fiber wad

6) Add shot

7) 10ga over shot card

8) Hot glue over shot card

I guess the confusing thing about loading black powder shotgun shells - brass or plastic hull - is that there is no "formula" to follow like smookeless. While black powder has some inherent cautions in handling, the resulting loads are very forgiving. The volume of black powder need not be precise and can very quite a bit. The wad materials can be any assortment of things as long as it provides the function of sealing the charge and pushes the shot out the barrel.

I started out using junk Federal plastic hulls, old black powder and Pyrodex I had accumulated. I used bathroom tissue for wading and it worked. But the TP tended to catch afire.

I use fiber wading fore and aft on the shot and water based super glue from Michael's to hold it all together. I do not roll the edges of the case.

What do you use to roll crimp brass?
