THe P-47 was great for taking damage and bringing it's pilot home again, unlike the more fragile P-51.

Good thing it kept running. They had the glide ratio of a big rock!!

I recorded the news from last night, have not seen it yet, but the teaser was a Warthog hitting power lines again.

Gabby Gabreski (leading US Euro Theater Ace) knocked himself down by hitting the ground strafing a German airfield.

Something German, I suspect.

Mebbe not. Tojo didn't like them either. But I suspect you are correct. Wonder what kind of tree it was?

Maybe it was one of those French trees that were planted to shade the German troops as they marched.

Same plane, different view - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3265/2779969303_e0e026be31_o.jpg

P-47 flown by Lt. Richard Sulzbach of the 364th Fighter Squadron, 350th Fighter Group, 12th Air Force. Lt. Sulzbach had a little run-in with some trees while on a strafing run over Italy. He was able to fly the plane 120 miles back to base.

A pair of A-10s were on a low level training flight over Stockton Lake in SW Missouri. One of them hit the "guard cables" over a power line. Knocked the cables down. It flew on to it's home base with "some" damage.
