Dubious Don #56333 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Any pards using WAA Lite or WST in their 12ga shotgun loads and how do you like it? I'm a Red Dot guy; been using that in my shotgun loads for thirty years but I ain't no stick in the mud, always looking for a better... From looking at the loading data, I'd get more rounds per pound with AA Lite than RD (not so sure about WST but I'd give it a try.
No Buk Chuck SASS # 24540 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Hi I've been using Win lite for a couple of years. I load a 1oz featherlite copy. Its a little dirty but a very nice load. I used Clays for many years. I prefer the Win lite. NBC
Chief Rick Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I am fairly new to reloading but I did try the WAA Lite - found it to be too dirty for my tastes. Use Clays for all Cowboy Action loads.
Phiren Smoke GUNFIGHTER Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 DD, When I first started reloading I tried Solo 1000, Clays, and WST. Of those I preferred Solo 1000. I have since switched to Promo which is a cheaper version of Red Dot and am very happy. It may not be the cleanest powder out there, but it is a very good all around powder, and relatively inexpensive. WST does meter well especially in small charge weights, but this would be of little consequence in 12 ga. loads. Hope this helps, Smoke
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I'm loading WAALite with 7/8 oz shot for my wife. It is economical but more importantly it doesn't beat her up. It's not the cleanest burning powder. However, one swipe of a 12 gauge bore snake leaves her shotgun clean so I don't care. Me - I shoot Goex FFg with a red plastic wad. That's a dirty load. WAALite is an extremely clean powder in comparision.
Charlie Whiskers Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I am fairly new to reloading but I did try the WAA Lite - found it to be too dirty for my tastes. Use Clays for all Cowboy Action loads. I was using Clays but got tired of the "greasy like" chunks of wad and 4 or 5 runs thru the bore with Hoppes and patches.Tried WAA Lite and it's a lot cleaner burning now.Instead of greasy chunks,it comes out in more of powder form now. Both were after running a bore brush thru 1st.
Curley Cole, SASS #56849 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I started with FeatherLites, loved the load, did not like the guck it left in the bore. Made my own load with Clays. So even when the came out with a Win. Powder I stayed with the Clays. Been using it for 5 years and love it still. with my load I get 467 loads from a pound of powder. good shootin curley
Buck D. Law, SASS #62183 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I use the AA Lite and it works just fine.
Lazarus Longshot, SASS #44254 Life Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Win AA Lite with the Featherlite load on the jug. A little dirty, but it cleans easy enough. Easier to clean than my black powder loads for sure!
Von Dutch, SASS # 7995 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I have been using AA lite for over two years it's a very clean powder if you get a good crimp,I like it a lot! Von Dutch
DOCBRAZOS, SASS#18033L Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Found the same thing using WST in my shotgun loads. Lots of unburned powder with "LITE" Loads. But no fear since I had bought so much I just started stuffing some in my 38 cases and got a nice clean burning rifle Powder. Clays for me for a feather lite load!
Fast Enuff Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Much to our surprise the light Red Dot loads have been very clean. Some leftover flakes here and there but not really any sludge. We rarely ever need to take one apart for cleaning.
Go West Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I've got some Winchester Superlite that I tried once. Musta had the wrong load, cause they were stout. I've been using a very nice load with American Select, low recoil and puts knockdowns down right quick. I'll give a few next time I see ya.
Jefro, SASS#69420 Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I've been very satisfied with Red Dot, use it for all my smokeless stuff. Good Luck Jefro
Buck D. Law, SASS #62183 Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Prairie Dawg has an excellent recipe for a light load using Clays. I came really close to switching to Clays for everything. I'd still like to play with it a bit with both cartridges and shotgun....just to see how I liked it.
BrimstoneJerome Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I just rolled two boxes using PD's load, we'll see how it goes tomorrow.
Rio Brazos Kid Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Buck, I worked up loads for the 38 spl. 125 gr. Pistol, and the 357 mag. 158 gr. Rifle, using Clays powder. Very clean and very efficient loads. Then experimented with shotshell loads and settled on a 1 oz. load at 1100 FPS again with Clays. Can't imagine anything working any better. I'm very happy with the performance of all. RBK
Dubious Don #56333 Posted February 5, 2011 Author Posted February 5, 2011 I've always been impressed with Red Dot by it's clean burning. I've tried Clays in handgun/rifle loads; I prefer Trailboss though, in the 45LC rifle I may stick with Bullseye because it is MUCH cleaner burning than TB. With the load I like in Red Dot and a "prospective" load of WAALite, both work out to be the same cost per round even though around here the shelf price if RD is 15.99 and WAALite 22.99. This cost will be cheaper when I can get either in 8lb caddys. Lefty Dude swears by American Select and I might try some eventually. I picked up a bottle of WAALite on the way home today, probably won'y get any loaded to try at the match tomorrow but I've got next week to do some for the match next week!
Stump Water Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I've always been impressed with Red Dot... Lefty Dude swears by American Select... Don't load shotgun ammo because it cost's more than buying Federal Estate... even with free AA/STS hulls. So, for what it's worth... Before CAS I was a Red Dot guy. 9MM to 44 mag. Once into CAS a fellow shooter swore by American Select... insisted it was much better than RD. So I did some fairly extensive testing of AS vs. RD in rifle/pistol cowboy loads. For all intents and purposes they're the same powder. Muzzle velocity standard deviation of RD was slightly less than AS (and I mean slightly, 5-10 FPS as I recall) so I stuck with Red Dot.
