Dapper Dave Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 I tried to chrono my 45 Colt BP loads in my 1858 with Howell conversion cylinder before the weather attacked us. And this might be the reason the readings varied from 158FPS to 2100 FPS...I think the smoke might have been interfering a wee bit. No, these loads would most likely not be good for CAS, as they are the full power original loads, real thumpers!
Dapper Dave Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 I think it was the smoke, not the high winds, as I was able to get good solid readings testing my new 38 Spl loads with 4 gr of ZIP under a cast 125gr Lee powder coated bullet in my Uberti 1873 Old Model Birds Head. I couldn't see how accurate they were as the wind wouldn't let me have a target stand stay up, but the recoil seems perfect for CAS. Now to find another one just like this one...
Trailrider #896 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 When shooting BP through a chronograph, I would stick pieces of paper in front of the screens to keep the smoke from doing that exact thing.
Dapper Dave Posted October 18, 2024 Author Posted October 18, 2024 Literally cover the front of the opening with a sheet of paper? Nifty, never thought of that!

Just be careful or you'll be singin' that song.... I shot my Chrono....but I did not shoot the Deputy! Been there, done that, have the spare parts to show for it. (You know, this site really needs a facepalm emoji!)
Cholla Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 I think you are supposed to be 10 feet from the muzzle to the chronograph so as not to have issues with the muzzle blast.

So now aiming is a complicating factor? I have not played with my chronometer yet, but can see smoke causing a problem
Preacherman Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 Well, I messed up a Pro Chrono by competition electronics with a shotgun at 10', couple bbs went wild. They were great. Fixed it cheap and we had a talk. She told me 5' for shotgun and black as I was having trouble with the black readings too. 6" above.
Lead Monger Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 I’ve killed three chronos and an old quartsloc over the years. Stray pellets, grease cookies and paper wads I never thought about doing a problem. And yes, a bullet or two. It happens.
Dapper Dave Posted October 19, 2024 Author Posted October 19, 2024 I killed my first chronograph with a 7 62x39mm SKS, ( yes, I reloaded and cast for that cartridge, still have the bullet mold), with my sixth shot...never did get the readings. 😁 Today was an interesting day any way you look at it, and knowledge you gain without pain or destruction is a good thing!
Griff Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 Cover the end thusly, and you can still aim and block smoke.

That how it's done when chrono BP loads. When using Prochrono, it picks up the shadow of the bullet passing through the screen.
Dapper Dave Posted October 19, 2024 Author Posted October 19, 2024 See, learn something new every day!
watab kid Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 i learned something new with that paper but im not shooting through the hole like that with paper in the way ,
Seminole Sam Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 The Garmin is far more expensive but has none of these problems. You get what you pay for. You shoot way over it and it just works. Also a lot smaller and easier to set up, I just leave it on the tripod.
Dapper Dave Posted October 22, 2024 Author Posted October 22, 2024 I have no idea what that is, sorry.

So no kidding, there I was, chrono'ing some black powder .45-70 loads that clocked 1700 fps... No way. Then I shot my chrono. Anyway, yeah, move the screens further back.
