Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Doxylamine Succinate is the active ingredient in Costco's Kirkland Sleep Aid, and I find it works, better than dyphenhydramine, the active ingredient in many. So it sounds like you may be responding favorably to this ingredient.

One side effect of B12 is not being able to get a good night's sleep. D vitamins can also impact your sleep. You should always take vitamins in the morning and not at night. https://healthmatch.io/insomnia/vitamins-that-cause-insomnia https://www.vita4you.gr/blog-vita4you/en/item/6-supplements-you-should-not-take-at-night.html

I have also taken myself totally off caffeine. No sodas or hot chocolate like I used to drink. Also, switched from ice tea to grapefruit juice. TM

I am, I have always gotten a good nights sleep when taken Nyquil and that is why I have added it to my arsenal of combating this insomnia issue. I have got to find a remedy so I can get back on track. I have missed the last two weekend matches because I didn't feel comfortable and safe handling firearms. I need to get ready for Land Run in about a month. TM

Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 My daughter in law (Thanks God, for sending her into our lives) sent me a "white sound" gadget. It's called Color Noise and came from Amazon for under $30.00. Probably made in China, but at this point I just don't care. It has ten different colors of night light if you want them but can stay dark if you don't, and a dimmer control so you can set them as bright as you want them.. It also has 24 different sounds that have volume controls, a timer for 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours or on until I turn it off. It has a memory feature and an auto-off feature. It's about 2 inches high and four inches in diameter. The only thing I find annoying is it's going to take me a month or more to try all the settings until I get it where want it to be all the time. Last night I listened a bunch of little singing birdies chirping away, until I got up and found a "rain on a widow" setting. I'll keep playing with it until I get it just right. I'd like to have an option for a very quiet and gentle snoring sound. My wife used to gently snore like a kitten, almost a sigh, and I miss that a lot.

If you start sleeping then add each one back individually. Maybe you can isolate which one s the problem. I've know a couple people who started having trouble sleeping due to taking too much B12.
watab kid Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 i dont take anything to help sleep , but ive often thought it might be useful ,

Cypress Sun Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 I've been reading this thread as I've had trouble sleeping for some time now. Some very good info. Also, I'm curious as to what "rain on a widow" sounds like.

I've know a couple people who started having trouble sleeping due to taking too much B12. This info was very interesting. I took them out of last nights meds cycle and took the Trazadone and Nyquil and slept for the first time in more than 2 weeks. I went to bed around 10 and fell asleep around 10:30 and slept until 9 this morning with the short bathroom break at 5:30. My wife got up with the puppy so I didn't have to deal with him this morning. Felt very good. Hopefully, I found a formula that works. Thanks for all the info. Thanks goes out to all of you for the great suggestions and by putting them all together to come up with a plan that hopefully will work. Last night's sleep felt great. I hope it continues for more than one night. I do plan on finding a sleep aid drug to replace the Nyquil so I am not taking some drugs I don't need. TM
Texas Maverick Posted September 2, 2024 Author Posted September 2, 2024 Seems our Costco carries the sleep aid that was mentioned to have the Doxylamine ingredient so I can take it instead of Nyquil. I will be visiting them either today or tomorrow and picking up some. Again thanks to all that have contributed to this very nasty insomnia issue. TM
Eyesa Horg Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 Sounding like you're reaching a positive outcome. Glad to see it!!

I was but just read that Trazadone and Nyquil (Doxylamine) should not be taken together so I am going to get some Doxylamine and try just it tonight without the Trazadone and see how that works. At least I am feeling rested right now.
Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 The only active ingredient in the Costco Kirkland "Sleep Aid" is Doxylamine Succinate, so that's one possible source. I'm sure there are others. I wouldn't 'over-research' things at this juncture. Use what works for now.

So I took only it last night and slept until 7 this morning so it seemed to have worked. Will stay with it again tonight. I like it better than the trazadone. Thanks for letting me know because it is cheaper than the Unisom I was getting ready to buy. 2 bottles for 7 bucks. TM
Texas Maverick Posted September 8, 2024 Author Posted September 8, 2024 5 nights of sleep after taking the Costco Sleep Aid. I even felt good enough to shoot a match yesterday. So I am hoping the insomnia is over. I am even considering taking a night off without the meds to see how I sleep but really don't want to rock the boat. It is good to get around 7 hours of sleep a night again. I just want to say thanks to all the cowboys and cowgirls that contributed suggestions while we worked this problem out. TM
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Well, the "white noise" gadget works. Not perfect yet but I found a sound I can live with ( a babbling brook on very low volume) and am going to raise the volume a notch at a time and drop the volume to 3 for a night or two until I get it all sorted out. I don't know who thought a diesel freight train was a soothing noise, but he should be locked away with this thing playing around the clock in his cell for a few years....maybe 30 or 40.
Dilli GaHoot Galoot Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Fair warning, this may not work for some folks and may even be a bit 'triggering', and I fully admit I am a bit disturbed by how soothing I find this, but who knows
Texas Maverick Posted September 9, 2024 Author Posted September 9, 2024 I was just told this is my problem. So please dream of someone else for awhile. LOL TM
Warden Callaway Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 I've had a long battle with insomnia. I tried melatonin. It just made me sleepy but didn't help me actually go to sleep. I've started taking PM ibproan at bedtime and doing better. Last night I slept from 9:00 to 2:15. Awake to after 3:00. Awoke at 6:30. A real good night for me. Besides everything else, my old body hurts lying down in bed. I can fall asleep in my recliner easily. I don't hurt standing or setting but can't get comfortable in bed.

Don't have insomnia, but was having the aches & pains in bed you describe. In the course of recovery from an injury driven surgery, Mobic / Meloxicam was prescribed (not narcotic) and a whole lot of the little pains went away. Told my Doc and got an ongoing prescription. Just one before bed time most of the pain in bed gone - sometimes I hit just the right position and all the pain is gone. Not expensive, and so far as i can tell, no downside.
