Eyesa Horg
Does anyone make lowered hammers for 1860's? I read a couple old posts about heating and bending them down, but being square it seems they would bulge on the corners and look like a bubba job. Whatcha all think. I hyper extended or something a finger tendon trying to shoot mine weak hand duelist last weekend! Still hurts like hell. They pretty much point straight up now, if I could at least get some pointing back would be good, but lowered would be great!
Rafe Conager SASS #56958
Don't know if they sell lowered hammers but I've had mine lowered by gunsmith. 2 sets were cut and weld 1 set was heated and bent. Boomstick jay did my last ones. You could always get a pair of hammers from Taylor's or vti to go back if you don't like them lowered. Sedalia Dave
Only options are Heat and Bend or Cut and Weld. No one sells hammers with a lower spur for any of the open tops

Warden Callaway
Since the sight is cut into the top of the hammer, how would you sight the gun? What am I missing here?

Only the spur is bent down, the hammer nose (with the rear sight) is not affected at all.

Choctaw Jack
Ken Griner lowered the spurs on two pairs of open tops for me. One pair of '71 Navies , and one pair of R-M conversions. Both work well and look great. ( He ' jeweled' them also). His info is in the Merchants Marketplace. Give him a call or shoot him a text. Chas B. Wolfson, SASS #11104
Some examples of our hammers that have been lowered using the heat method. A couple show a little proud at the bend area but nothing extreme or really noticeable. I am a pain in the ass regarding detail and nothing here bothers me. First four pics are of Annie's three Model P Jrs. Next four pics are of my four '72 Open Tops. Next four pics are of a pair of Colts. Last pic is of the hammer for my fifth '72 Open Top. Hammer just arrived ten minutes ago. The '72 hammers would be representative of the 1860 hammer spurs. If interested, let me know and I will P.M. contact info. Work performed by a SASS member. Regards, Chas B That might work for me, I hope! Are they bent right at the end of the spur knurling? Seems like something I could accomplish myself. Just need to know how hot to get them and bend with a box wrench as I've read on Google foo. Thanks CBW
Eyesa Horg
Wish I could afford a pair of ROAs, but that's pricey as I only shoot cap guns a few times a year for Plainsman side matches, which I really enjoy! Now that my hand is starting to feel better, I tried em again and only got 3 cocks before that finger sproigned again! This getting old crap is ridiculous

I figure if I clamp it between aluminum blocks in the vise, it will act like a heat sink to protect the rest of the hammer.
Burn Through
I don’t think you will want aluminum blocks in it at all , it melts a pretty low temp . But you will probably have to get it about red in order to bend , I think we used a crescent wrench to bend . Then warm back up to put in used oil get just a start of red then dunk , this should get temper about right . We also welded the v notch and filed flat before bending

Burn Through
Oh sorry , I was talking about the face of hammer . The one that sets on safety pins . Fire and fall back walked up to me one day and said weld that up it helps with cap suck ha ha . I did what he said and never looked back

Eyesa Horg
1 hour ago, Rooster Ron Wayne said: The Real Question is Why . As in my OP, I hyperextended(I guess) my 3rd finger on my weak hand trying to cock shooting duelist. It's apparently too far for my thumb to reach the hammer spur! I've tried again since it happened and the same result after 3 cocks. The tendon rides right up over the knuckle at my palm. I gotta tell ya, it hurts like a bugger! So that's why! Can't shoot strong hand due to a bad shoulder that can't lift the gun high enough to shoot one handed.

Eyesa Horg
I'd like to try something short of the expense of ROAs! As much as I'd like a pair! I can cock my Vaqueros without issue, so hoping lowering the hammers on my 1860s will do the trick for as little as I shoot them.
Eyesa Horg
Thanks guys! I liked the idea of bending my current hammers, so while doing a little more research; I found an old thread from 2012 from @Choctaw Silver Wolf SASS 66636. I reached out to Choctaw and he was able to accommodate bending the hammers for me. I think he did a wonderful job and it was only 7 days total from my PO and back to my mailbox! Amazingly quick turn around. Hopefully this will help with whatever I did to my hand. Saw the Doc today and he didn't seem to think there was any issue. I still have difficulty cocking, but the lowered hammers helped as I can at least do it, just barely. Hopefully the next time I shoot them, a few week from now, all will be good. Much Obliged Choctaw EH
