PaleWolf Brunelle, #2495L Posted November 22, 2023 Share Posted November 22, 2023 Obviously the insert is a rimfire cartridge adapter of some sort (note the off-center hole visible in this photo). I would suggest a rigorous cleaning of the original chamber and the adapter, do a chamber cast, then measure all diameters to determine the exact calibers/cartridges. They mention the cartouche of Frank C. Warner, which looks like my stamp on the stock. The one on the page was a metal stamp. Not into the wood like mine. Still not sure on thst insert, unless ammo was scarce and they wanted to shoot BP? Easier to find maybe? There was mention that a contract company made some of these rifles and they didn't mark them with any builder markings.... Which seems odd. Cowtown Scout, SASS #53540 L Posted November 23, 2023 Share Posted November 23, 2023 Of the many Remington 1867 Rolling block made only a certain number were part of the Navy Contract and were thus stamped by the Navy Inspector. As some of these were converted later to other configurations, and barrels were taken off and sold to the public. So there are some non Navy contract carbines out there with Navy barrels which is what you may have.
