some thing looks a mite odd about the adaptor

wonder how much barrel is attached to the adaptor

extraction /ejection of the fired case looks to be another issue

I'm going to do more cleaning and disassembly of it and see more of what's going on in the receiver area. It looks like a. 22

So I tried a modern. 22 round and it won't fit.  Added some more pics. None of the trapdoor pics I'm finding has the odd piece on the side of the receiver. 20231121_221919.thumb.jpg.1f3a220ae9da9dfb7720b2b0a06c8f7d.jpg20231121_222130.thumb.jpg.6f51a9ab38c2b00e8d657311f4426bc9.jpg20231121_222112.thumb.jpg.2f3c37ff8aa21671d34952bcf5d7b4ba.jpg20231121_221948.thumb.jpg.f70ad094c164e63c4ed127d5f3d69ec5.jpg20231121_221933.thumb.jpg.2490e7339bf07a200d694b7c1bedd4b3.jpg

That Remington Rolling Block has me baffled , maybe some kind of line gun ?

a stretch to sort out some use for it , maybe crimped rat shot ?

or a blank for signaling ?

I have not seen anything like it ,

Maybe Phantom has a better idea , I am out of em

I'm going to work on soaking and cleaning the bore and trying to figure out if that bore is still what appears to be a 50 caliber bore all the way to the receiver. Will advise

Oh the humanity! 1867 Navy carbine all buggered up. But then, lots of great rollers and trapdoors got butchered back in the days when nobody appreciated them.

Show us a photo of the right side of the receiver.  If it is a real navy 1867 carbine there should be some markings there.  They were .50-45 caliber.

Obviously the insert is a rimfire cartridge adapter of some sort (note the off-center hole visible in this photo).

I would suggest a rigorous cleaning of the original chamber and the adapter, do a chamber cast, then measure all diameters to determine the exact calibers/cartridges.

Here's an article on various units: https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/cartridge-adapters/

There was an ad for an 1867 Navy rolling block on the College Hill Arsenal site. They mention the cartouche  of Frank C. Warner, which looks like my stamp on the stock.  The one on the page was a metal stamp. Not into the wood like mine.

Still not sure on thst insert, unless ammo was scarce and they wanted to shoot BP? Easier to find maybe?

There was mention that a contract company made some of these rifles and they didn't mark them with any builder markings.... Which seems odd.  But I can't find anything stamped on it except the anchor and the 38xx serial number anywhere.

I think Dusty is on the money.

Of the many Remington 1867 Rolling block made only a certain number were part of the Navy Contract and were thus stamped by the Navy Inspector.  As some of these were converted later to other configurations, and barrels were taken off and sold to the public.  So there are some non Navy contract carbines out there with Navy barrels which is what you may have.  Attached are some photos of what the Navy markings on the right side of the receiver should look like.
