Sure thing, I've had a lot of fun figuring it out. I picked up a custom built bull barrel rolling block for not a ton of money, and it's pretty cool.

Be honest with you, I love tinkering and ciphering new obsolete nonsense almost as much as shooting. Just worked out 38-56, and in the process of getting 40-60 lined out (thanks for putting the bug in my ear, @H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 🤣)

RCBS cowboy set with the Redding profile crimp for both 44-40 and 38-40 here, zero issues with either. The Square Deal B 44-40 set up works well if you want a dedicated press, although I run them through the redding profile on a single stage after.

I'm the 357-44 guy from the other thread. I absolutely love old obsolete oddball stuff, especially bottleneck, (the winchester dash cartridges), and have almost as much fun figuring out how to make or reproduce them as I do shooting rm them. In competition I shoot full house 44-40 or 38-40, and was messing around with something to try to be more competitive in FC Gunfighter when PRGF wasn't offered without giving up the smoke and boom that I love. 357-44 Bain and Davis was a short lived wildcat from the 1980s that necked down a 44 Magnum to a 38. I managed to cobble a die set together, and tweaked it all to use a 105 gr big lube bullet and filled it with fffg Schutzen. Little bit of time, a chamber reamer, a pair of 357 OMVs, a 357 barrel, a 38-40 1873, and a fair amount of cussing, and I've got my new set up rolling. Fun to shoot and pretty unique. If I can figure out how, I'll post some pictures.

Yeah, I don't forsee ever finding one of those, but it's really cool to know that at least one of them is with a cowboy. 357-44 is an obscure wildcat cartridge from the 80s that I've modified for black powder. It's a 44 magnum case necked down to a 357, full of fffg, with a 105 gr big lube. Ton of boom and smoke and flame without all the recoil of a 44-40 or 38-40. I've built a pair of vaqueros and a 73 in it, although the 73 still has a few kinks I'm working out. Weirdo bottlenecks are kinda my thing. If I could find a 38-56 lightning for 4k, I'd grab it in a heartbeat. There's currently one on GI for 11k, little rich for my blood. 40-60 doesn't interest me too much, it's basically an anemic straight wall 40-65 to my eye. I guess I could look at what it would take to sleeve and chamber bore it to 38-56, but I don't feel right doing an old colt like that. I'll just keep watching and crossing my fingers. 🤠 The hunt is half the fun!

So are you interested in adopting an heir to your lightning collection? A BOLT?! What did they make, like 9 of those?! I've got 38-40 AWA 44-40 AWA 38-40 Colt 32-20 Colt On the hunt for a 357 to convert to 357-44, and the ever illusive 38-56. I don't have any illusion of ever finding a bolt short of larceny. 🤣

It's a little bit of a head scratcher, but the large frame lightnings always put me in mind of Alan Richtman's famous line from Quigley Down Under; "An experimental weapon with experimental ammunition". None of the rounds used in the large lightning were popular or standard (45-85-285, 38-56, 40-60, 50-95 express), it's almost like they were trying to see how many layers of unusual they could cram into one rifle 🤣. I've never actually had a large frame in my paws, but I've got several in more standard chamberings (44-40, 38-40, 32-20) and the guns just intrigue me in a way few other guns do. I rarely shoot them in competition, but get to see guys like Lassiter, Boaz, and Jay Vendetta run em like a scalded cat on the regular, and can't get enough of the craziness.

That's a beauty! 45-85-285, but they'll basically shoot 45-70, correct? I really would love one in 38-56 (my favorite screwball rifle cartridge), but I've never seen one under 10 grand.

So I'm guessing the wait for them to release a large frame in 38-56 might be lengthy?
