I haven’t been reloading long but I’ve always used Federal small pistol primers in the blue box or the red and gold box and have never had any trouble.  My wife and I both shoot NM Vaqueros with action jobs and the federal Primers have never failed us.  I load a very light 38 spl. load.  I’ve  only got 500 left and can’t find them anywhere, every place I’ve looked is out of stock.  What is another brand that someone has had good luck with as far as being reliable?

Thanks

It's not the primer that fails here-it has everything to do with how the gun was set up.

This is one reason to never build a gun for a specific primer.

WW or RP work well.

I use S&B primers along with the Federal Small pistol. Both work.

I understand that CCI and Winchester (which is most of what I have on hand) can be two of the harder primers. I also like Federal but haven’t seen any for a while.

Thanks guys!  Can you elaborate a little on the abbreviations?

S&B, Sellier & Bellot.  Good primers, sensitive, cheaper than Federal.

Powder Valley has Fed Small Pistol Match - they will work fine for CAS loads.

You fellers are sure lucky you get any kinda choice. Up here, I'm just happy to find any large pistol primers. Sometimes it's CCI, sometimes Winchester.

I buy whatever I can find.

Never seen Sellier & Bellot and rarely Federals although other parts of the country, or dealers I don't get to, may have them.

Howdy Dave, This, most of us buy primers, powder, bullets in bulk through the net. Usually get lower shipping cost as well as savings on hazmat. If you don't shoot enough to justify buying in bulk hook up with one or two other shooters to spread the savings. A lot of us do this for BP or CFDA, for smokeless 4-8lb kegs, primers 5k-15k. Also check members of local gun club, ours has an account with wholesale supplier. One of the first things covered in #& shooting school is that your firearm should be able to use any primer....and too light a load has a point of diminished returns;). I've had good service from Winchester, Magtech and Wolfe....... Win the most for BP. Good Luck:)
