Appalachian Alan
It has been a category around here for years. But it has different guidelines depending on where you go. 2 pistols holstered , 2 pistols staged, no shotgun in some places 2 pistols holstered , 2 pistols staged, 1 pistol staged for shotgun in some places 4 pistols holstered in some places. BLACKFOOT SASS #11947
Josey Wales Category is not an official category and each club more or less defines it for their matches. Check your local club for information. Blackfoot
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
At Tusco we shoot 5 pistols your rifle pistols and shotgun pistol are staged your pistol pistols are holstered it was designed as GF or duelist style shooting, but at our special JW match, we allow GF, duelist or squaw grip, BP or smokeless the shooter only gets one shot at shotgun targets, so in a 10-10-4 stage, only 4 are loaded in the shotgun pistol however, since so many shooters only shoot JW once a year, at our November JW match, we set up all the stages as 10-10-5 that way we don't have a bunch of shooters accidentally having live rounds left in their guns JW shooters only have to hit the shotgun targets, not knock them down so we get cowgirls shooting light 32s shooting it too its a ton of fun i recommend it highly i sometimes shoot it with 5 cap guns -- Too Much Fun --Dawg
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329
By the way......we frequently have JW shooters at every match with the sass shooter group aging, we frequently have shooters who can not shoot long guns because of shoulder injuries no problemo -- they can still shoot with us they just shoot JW just make sure you have places for them to stage their guns sometimes JW shooters need to make small changes in the stage due to stage design no problem as long as safety comes first and all JW shooter shoot the stage the same, all is good
El Hombre Sin Nombre
Cool thread. I am planning to shoot Josey Wales style for the first time this saturday with 4 pistols. Just because that isn't tough enough, I am using my 87 for the shotgun. All in BP. Yeah I am a glutton for punishment. Should be fun though. Imis Twohofon,SASS # 46646
RT When I shoot JW I use 2 pistols holstered, 2 pistols staged for the rifle targets, and a fifth pistol for the shotgun targets. Our local rules allow for the possibility of a miss on the SG targets so we can load 5 rounds, and even a sixth after the first round goes down range. We must knock down the SG targets just like using a SG. A 44 Mag, 240 gr swc over a full case of fffg does the job well. The down side is that if you load 5 and only need 4 to take the targets down you must still fire the fifth round on the clock. Not really much of a time penalty. The Holy Black make it even more fun. Just dont get confused on which targets to shoot with which pistols or you could have a 100 seconds of penalty, just like me.lol We also allow the use of an 87 or a SxS under normal SASS rule, no 97s. . I think 5 pistols are more fun. Imis
Jed I. Knight, SASS #36423
We do play with this category at least once per year. And, although this was one of my first videos for JED iTV it still holds up as a pretty good example of the Josey Wales category.
Dee Mak Jack, SASS #55905
I'm in !! I still hope to use the shotgun along with 4 pistols but I'm flexible.....well I used to be until father time caught up with me.
Turkey Creek Red, SASS # 22854
At our range, we use 4 pistols and a shotgun that is either an 87 or a hammered double. The hammers must be functional and the category is shot either duelist or gunfighter. We place tables so that if a cowboy cannot holster all or the pistols the rifle pistols can be staged. If they decide to holster all of them we waive the rule re: how close the holsters can be.
irish ike, SASS #43615
Ours is a little more real Josey 4 pistols, 2 holstered, 2 staged, and a single shot big bore rifle. One set of pistols shoots the pistol targets, one set of pistols shoots the rifle targets, and the big bore shoots rifle specific targets at about 40 to 50 yds. This way we can shoot regular SASS Targets and Josey targets. The regular shooters shoot shotgun targets. We have a men's BP category (real Josey), a mens smokeless (Josey Light), and a women's whatever category (Josey's girlfriend). We give out a nice handmade trophy and a bottle of fine spirits for each winner. Ike

Jefro, SASS#69420
Howdy Rootin Tootin, as others have mentioned it depends on where gonna shoot. Josey Wales and other special BP categories are usually approved for State, Annual and other BP only matches. Here are the ones I've seen the most. (copied from IBPG) Good Luck Pale Rider Pale Rider consists of main match cartridge pistols and lever action rifle of 40 Caliber and above (38-40 on up). For bullet weights of 200 grs or more, a black powder charge of 25 grs by volume (1.6 cc's) is required. For 38-40, a bullet weight of 180 grs is permitted; however, the black powder charge is increased to a minimum of 30 grs by volume (2.0 cc's). 12 gauge shotgun only; minimum charge is 60 grs (4.0 cc's) and 1 1/8 oz of shot. Pale Rider is shot gunfighter style, although a duelist category may be offered, depending on the number of entries for the match. Plainsman Plainsman consists of Cap & Ball revolvers, shot duelist style, a lever-action or double barrel shotgun, and a single shot pistol or rifle caliber rifle. Please do not load heavy rifle rounds to minimize damage to the match targets. Plainsman will fire approximately half of the otherwise required stage rifle rounds. Josey Wales Josey Wales participants will shoot 4 SASS main match revolvers and a double barrel or lever action shotgun. No rifle is required for this category. Revolvers may be shot duelist or gunfighter, 10 shots at the pistol targets and 10 shots at the rifle targets. Gunfighter style may only be utilized from revolvers secured in straight hang holsters from opposite sides of the body, or safely staged on props. Turkey Creek Red, SASS # 22854
Something else that we do for the people that shoot JW. If there is more than 1 competitor, we give an award to the winner and all others get a confederate grey ribbon that says that they are dead. There is after all, with Josey, only 1 that is alive. All others are dead.
Blackey Cole
I hope it progresses like wb did so we can shootit at least like a plainsman sidematch. I even requested a JW sidematch at eot this summer I guess if enough will ask for it also they might hold it.
