Rye Miles #13621 Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Real black powder. Currently using Big Lube bullets for my 45 Colt. I just realized he also has 44-40 bullet as well so I will probably go to him first. And he is local (within an hours drive). I have been using Ringer's bullets for my smokeless 44-40 loads and I like them a lot. I didn't know desperado bullet lube could be used with black powder as well. Even for rifles? Is there enough lube on them? They work just fine in the rifles.
Doc Fill 'Em 67797 Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Ringer's bullets also use a BP compatible lube. I emailed him about it.
Cemetery Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I used to clean my guns after every match. Now I can't be bothered. Do it when I have time. got it down to 30mins for rifle, and two cap and ball guns.....just clean out the shotgun with smokeless loads at the next match.
mezcal mike Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 The only thing I ever cleaned my '73 with (shooting a Sub) is CLP. Never get water on any part of it. what is clp?
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Breakfree CLP Universal lubricant. I prefer Ballistol for BP. Ford/Chevy debate. YMMV.
Tombstone Tex Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 And out of curiosity, for the multi day road shoots, whats the story on caring for the brass? Using GOEX I found my brass got pretty nasty by the time I drove home from a monthly local match.

Whether it's BP or subs, at the unloading table or very shortly thereafter, put them in jar of water with a drop or two of dishwashing liquid mixed in. Rinse when you get home -- even it's been a day or two -- air dry and throw in the tumbler.
Amarillo Rattler Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I add a little Simple Green to the water and decap the brass before putting them in the mix. After the match agitate the brass in the container and watch the liquid change from light green to so black you can't see the brass. Pour the brass into a strainer and rinse with water. Then the brass can wait 'til you are ready to rotary tumble with stainless steel pins. Brass will look better than new. Welcome to the Dark Side! AR
Yusta B. Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 After soaking in water/dish soap on the ride home, you can rinse, drain well & pop right into your tumbler. No need to dry. Been doing that for years.

Been doing that for years. You must be using a wet tumbler. If I tried that each case would be packed full of ground corncob!!

Tombstone Tex Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Good advice folks, didn't mean to hijack so-to-speak, however this thread really is about clean up of BP so I suppose it wasn't actually a hijack. The PA State shoot is this weekend, so unfortunately I will not be running BP this weekend, not enough time to make the loads up, but I think at the next monthly I will give it a shot and see how it goes for the brass.
Sedalia Dave Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 You must be using a wet tumbler. If I tried that each case would be packed full of ground corncob!! Do it all the time. However, I use fine ground walnut medial I picked up from Harbor Freight.

Noz Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 J-Bar don't do it. I sat and picked walnut out of a couple of hundred 41 mag cases that had been thrown in the tumbler wet. Bad deal!
